Touted as being the best-selling newspaper in Germany, Bild recently revealed they plan to replace some of their staff on the editorial board with artificial intelligence instead, in order to cut costs as the company plans to go fully digital within the next several years.
The tabloid publication owned by publishing powerhouse Axel Springer, alerted staff on Monday that they would reluctantly be making cuts as they outlet transitions away from physical print papers, The Telegraph reports, as readership has been on decline as well.
Unfortunately part ways with colleagues whose jobs will be replaced by AI and/or automated processes in the digital world, or who do not find themselves in this new line-up with their current skills.
Roles such as editors, print production journalists, proofreaders, photo editors and assistants will no longer exist like they do today.

While it is unclear how many jobs will be hemorrhaged, it is believed it will be in the ballpark of the low hundreds.
CEO Mathias Döpfner stated in February that AI tools such as ChatGPT could “make independent journalism better than it ever was – or replace it”, adding that AI would soon be better at the “aggregation of information” than physical journalists and stated that only publishers who created “the best original content,” The Guardian reported.
Also, the newspaper will be merging a number of its regional titles and closing smaller offices completely. Its sister paper Welt will also be transferring to fully digital within the next several years.
‘The overhaul at Bild will see the company’s total number of regional papers reduced from 18 to 12, with a string of city-specific titles merged into broader regional publications and smaller offices closed,’ The Telegraph added.
The move has been criticized by the German Journalists Association (DJV), claiming the move will just cause them to lose more readers due to the reduction in local journalism.
If Mathias Döpfner wants to slaughter the cash cow of the group, that’s not only unfair to the employees but also economically extremely stupid.
Less regional reporting means less service for the readers and therefore fewer readers.

Other media and news outlets around the world are now deploying AI, such as Kuwait unveiling an AI-generated avatar to present the daily news casts, along with other digital publications using AI to write and edit their stories, The WinePress has reported. China is also using AI-generated avatars to report the news as well.
