Japan heavily imports their energy supplies from other countries and currently the nation is getting slammed with inflation, and so it therefore appears Japan has finally started to give-in.
The purchase order was made earlier this year, according to Russian media outlet Tass.
Tass wrote:
Japan purchased a small volume of oil from Russia in February at the average price of $68.5 per barrel, which is above the price cap set by Tokyo together with other countries for Russian oil excluding supplies from the Sakhalin-2 project, according to TASS’ calculations based on data released by the Japanese finance ministry on Thursday.
In particular, Japan purchased 37,000 kiloliters (around 232,700 barrels) of oil from Russia in February. The total cost of oil imports was 2.125 bln yen (or $15.945 mln). Consequently, the cost of one barrel from this batch equaled $68.52, which exceeds the price ceiling on Russian oil of $60 per barrel set by G7 nations.
Tokyo joined other G7 countries in the implementation of the mechanism of price cap on Russian oil. However, an exception was made for supplies from the Sakhalin-2 project, with its main product being LNG, while oil supplies contingent on gas contracts. Japan receives around 9% of all LNG imports from Sakhalin-2, whereas Russian gas accounts for around 3% of all power generation.

According to a recent post by the Wall Street Journal, the United States actually permitted this transaction in order to allow Japan to make sure they have guaranteed energy.
Furthermore, as ZeroHedge also noted:
The concession shows Japan’s reliance on Russia for fossil fuels, which analysts said contributed to a hesitancy in Tokyo to back Ukraine more fully in its war with Russia. It also shows why the price cap was imposed at a level where it doesn’t actually adversely impact Russian oil exports. But the current price surge means that unless the price cap is lifted, the U.S. alliance is about to shoot itself in the leg.
Going back to Japan, it’s the one country which – at a time when most European countries have at least claimed they are reducing their reliance on Russian energy supplies – has stepped up its purchases of Russian natural gas over the past year. Japan is the only Group of Seven nation not to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was the last G-7 leader to visit Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.
Simply put, as Indian outlet First Post put it, this shows that the sanctions that Western and G7 allies have levied against Russia are simply “hollow,” and represents another victory for Russia in their war against Ukraine.
This move also serves to further strengthen the size and momentum of the BRICS nations. And, as the Economic Ninja forecasts, he thinks this event is a foreshadowing that Japan will eventually cave and join BRICS to better serve their interests, eventually causing more U.S. allies to betray America in the end.
