World’s Largest Meat Processing Plant Shutdown Due To Cyberattack

JBS Foods, the world’s largest meat processing company has become prey to the latest cyber attack, stymying global production and distribution.

According to one of JBS’ partners, the World Economic Forum (WEF), the company is described as one of the

World’s largest processors of animal protein, with 250,000 employees and revenues of $50 billion. It’s among the top 5 largest food and beverage companies in the world. Originally founded in Brazil, JBS is a global company, with North America representing 55% and Asia-Pacific 20% of the group. The company’s main operations are in the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Brazil.

Chief executive Brent Eastwood told Beef Central on Monday that JBS’ information systems were targeted.

An additional spokesperson for the company refused to comment on the recent cyber attacks, according to ABC News Australia.

Jon Condon, a publisher for Beef Central, told ABC Radio Brisbane, that the impact of this shutdown varies on the length of the stoppage.

At this point nobody knows. It could be a day, it could be a week, it could be multiple weeks. The longer it goes, the worse the situation in terms of supply and disruption.

I don’t think anyone should be concerned about potentially running short of meat. 

There are a lot meat processors in Australia other than JBS, and if this issue was to extend beyond a short period of time, it would not be that difficult or unusual for processing to occur in other locations by other companies to keep the meat supply in order.

If it’s only short term, a day’s processing loss isn’t going to make that much difference.

According to Condon, this attack and its significance should not be underestimated, as JBS is the world’s largest manufacturer of chicken, beef, and pork.

David Littleproud, Federal Agriculture Minister, gave confirmation that the government was aware of the cyber attack and is working to help get the company back online.

We’re obviously working with law enforcement here in Australia and we’re also working with our international partners. It’s under investigation and it’s important that we respect that process.

The technology that [JBS] use, the systems they use, go to the heart of the quality assurance of the beef that they process. 

So we need to make sure that we can get that up and going to give confidence, not just to consumers here in Australia, but also to our export markets.

Speaking on the effects this will have Australian businesses and workers, Australian Meat Industry Employees’ Union Queensland secretary Matt Journeaux, is concerned of the impacts this attack will have, including effects in other nations as well.

If this stoppage were to last multiple days, the cattle would most likely be returned to corral, feedlots or agistment.

This will create logistical problems right up and down the supply chain. It’s going to put enormous hardship on the JBS operations.

‘Earlier this month, Argentina announced a snap 30-day ban on all beef exports with ramifications for the trade globally, including a possible shortage of lean beef,’ says the Australian report.

When those cuts are in a box, computers print tickets with barcodes for those cuts, and I think all of those systems have been affected by this.

Russians Hackers Strike Again

Today The White House stated that the ransomware attack is likely to have originated from a criminal organization based in Russia, according to Reuters.

The White House has offered assistance to JBS and our team at the Department of Agriculture have spoken to their leadership several times in the last day.

JBS notified the administration that the ransom demand came from a criminal organization likely based in Russia. The White House is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals.

The Reuters report states that if the outages continue, meat prices could inflate again, and exports will be slowed down as China is seeing strong demand for meat.

On Sunday, May 30, JBS USA determined that it was the target of an organised cybersecurity attack, affecting some of the servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems.

Resolution of the incident will take time, which may delay certain transactions with customers and suppliers.

JBS’ North American headquarters is located in Greeley, Colorado, which manages 20% of the slaughtering capacity for swine and cattle.

Fabrication and slaughter shifts have been canceled at the Colorado plant. One of its beef plants in Cactus, Texas, said it would not work on Tuesday – shifting their original work schedule that they were going to work normally.

The Canadian facility in Alberta canceled their shifts on Monday and canceled one today at the time of the Reuters report, a little before 2:00 PM EST.

A company representative from Sao Paulo, Brazil, stated their operations have not stopped or were impacted.

The fact that JBS has been directly working with the WEF simply validates that this was planned; and, as far as I am concerned, the company flipped a metaphorical switch and shut the power off, and then the media uses Russia as their go-to whipping post.
