According to a Reuters report, Google stated that the feature would launch later this year in the United States and other nations on the continent to help battle climate change through their services.
Default routes will be set to “eco-friendly” if similar routes take roughly the same amount of time unless users opt-out according to Google. If alternative routes are faster, Google will give the option to compare the routes based on estimated emissions.

Google additionally announced that starting in June they will warn drivers to travel through low emissions zones where some vehicles are restricted in some European nations such as Germany, Spain, France, the U.K., and the Netherlands.
In a few more months from now, Google Map users will also be able to compare transit options such as car, bike, and public services such as buses or a trolley, instead of switching to different sections within the app.
