According to a Reuters report, Google stated that the feature would launch later this year in the United States and other nations on the continent to help battle climate change through their services.
Default routes will be set to “eco-friendly” if similar routes take roughly the same amount of time unless users opt-out according to Google. If alternative routes are faster, Google will give the option to compare the routes based on estimated emissions.
What we are seeing is for around half of routes, we are able to find an option more eco-friendly with minimal or no time-cost tradeoff.

‘Google said it derives emissions relative estimates by testing across different types of vehicles and road types, drawing on insights from the U.S. government’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL). Road grade data comes from its Street View cars as well as aerial and satellite imagery,’ says the Reuters report.
Last year a study of 20 researchers conducted at California State University, Long Beach, found that users were more inclined to consider carbon emissions in route choices after testing an app that displayed these options.
Google additionally announced that starting in June they will warn drivers to travel through low emissions zones where some vehicles are restricted in some European nations such as Germany, Spain, France, the U.K., and the Netherlands.
In a few more months from now, Google Map users will also be able to compare transit options such as car, bike, and public services such as buses or a trolley, instead of switching to different sections within the app.
