On March 21st the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a second cell-cultured meat product.

The nation’s first approved lab-grown meat product was granted to Upside Foods’ faux chicken in November of last year. Now the FDA has approved fake meat from a company called GOOD Meat, who are also looking to market their faux chicken as well.

In their press release the FDA wrote:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completed its second pre-market consultation for a human food made from cultured animal cells. We evaluated the information GOOD Meat, Inc submitted to the agency and have no further questions at this time about the firm’s safety conclusion. The firm will use animal cell culture technology to take living cells from chickens and grow the cells in a controlled environment to make the cultured animal cell food.

The voluntary pre-market consultation is not an approval process. Instead, it means that after our careful evaluation of the data and information shared by the firm, we have no further questions at this time about the firm’s safety conclusion. The FDA’s pre-market consultation with the firm included an evaluation of the firm’s production process and the cultured cell material made by the production process, including the establishment of cell lines and cell banks, manufacturing controls, and all components and inputs.

GOOD Meat had already been approved in Singapore in late-2020 and permitted to be served at restaurants, the first in the world, as reported by The WinePress:

Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of GOOD Meat and Eat Just, said in a statement:

Since Singapore approved GOOD Meat for sale, we knew this moment was next. I am so proud to bring this new way of making meat to my country and to do it with a hero of mine, Chef José Andrés.

Andrés, a New York Times bestselling author, educator, television personality, and founder of World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that uses the power of food to nourish communities and strengthen economies during times of crises; who joined GOOD Meat’s Board of Directors in 2021, said in a statement:

The future of our planet depends on how we feed ourselves…and we have a responsibility to look beyond the horizon for smarter, sustainable ways to eat. GOOD Meat is doing just that, pushing the boundary on innovative new solutions, and I’m excited for everyone to taste the result.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; [3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

1Timothy 4:1-3

The FDA may have approved it, but will the people? I doubt it. Even though these groups and companies are relentless, the people do not want it, especially as Americans are slowly (at a snail’s pace) wanting to fix their health; and these fake meats, both plant-based and lab-grown, or horrible for your health.

On top of that, ethically and regeneratively raising livestock the right way is not only beneficial for the animals, it is also benefits the environment in the process.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
