Another Christmas, another year the Satanic Temple has decided to flex their ‘religious liberty rights,’ by erecting a statue of Baphomet in the Iowa state Capitol Building. This has caused a number of Iowans to call upon Republican Governor Kim Reynolds to get this statue removed.

The display also features the Baphomet holding a red and black wreath with an inverted pentagram in the middle, surrounded by candles and other sayings the Satanic Temple calls the “seven fundamental tenets.”

As noted in a report by The Des Moines Register, while there are advocacy groups and lawmakers that are taking issue with this display, some even forming prayer groups to pray against these idols, lawmakers also contend there is little that can be done to rectify this situation due to First Amendment rights.

Lucien Greaves, spokesman and co-founder of the Satanic Temple, contends that the group should be allowed to have equal representation, and those who don’t like it do not have to.

People assume that we’re there to insult Christians and we’re not. And I would hope that even people who disagree with the symbolism behind our values, whether they know what those values (are) or not, would at least appreciate that it’s certainly a greater evil to allow the government to pick and choose between forms of religious expression.

Greaves said.

Representative Brad Sherman, who is also a pastor, introduced legislation that seeks “for clarifying legislation to be adopted in accordance with our State Constitution that prohibits satanic displays in our Capitol building and on all state owned property.” He also proposed that the Ten Commandments would be displayed in all state buildings, including the Capitol, and in Iowa public schools.

But Sherman ‘may not have wholehearted support of his initiative from other Republican legislators, some of whom say they would oppose the government limiting freedom of speech in reaction to the display, which will be in place for a total of two weeks,’ the Des Moines Register added.

The lawmaker and other Iowans have called upon Governor Reynolds to have the display removed, but Reynolds has remained silent thus far.

In 2021, the Satanic Temple displayed a baby Baphomet in a manger emulating the birth of Jesus Christ, which was featured at the Illinois state Capitol building.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

Oh, so they have religious rights and liberty, but people who read the Bible in school, have prayer, or display the 10 Commandments somewhere, that’s terrible and bigoted, and pushing our religious beliefs on them; but having shrines to Baphomet, and the promotion of everything that the Holy King James Bible calls wickedness and abominations is celebrated. Figures.

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Psalm 9:17

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
