FDA Fast-Tracks Clearance For Gene-Edited CRISPR Cattle For Meat Consumption

‘The so-called PRLR-SLICK cattle join a short list of gene-edited animals approved by the FDA for human consumption, including Aqua Bounty’s GMO salmon and a pig whose meat lacks the sugar that causes some people to have allergic reactions to red meat,’ explained agricultural outlet Successful Farming.

These are the first type of gene-edited cattle to receive an FDA “low-risk determination for enforcement discretion.” Before making their decision, the FDA reportedly researched the information surrounding gene-splicing cows, before reaching their conclusion that the genetic modification was identical to naturally occurring mutations seen in cattle in hot climates.

The FDA said, “Further, the food from the cattle is the same as food from conventionally bred cattle that have the same slick-hair trait.”

We expect that our decision will encourage other developers to bring animal biotechnology products forward for the FDA’s risk determination in this rapidly developing field, paving the way for animals containing low-risk IGAs (intentional genomic alterations) to more efficiently reach the marketplace.

Additionally, the FDA announced that farmers who produce and breed these PRLR-SLICK cattle, who use the conventional breeding techniques (in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfers, cloning, sex control, cross-breeding, biometrics, marker-assisted selection), do not have to register with the FDA.

The “precision breeding” company, Acceligen, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, use the gene-editing software CRISPR to create cattle with the short-haired traits, known as a slick coat. Some scientists believe that cows with a slick coat may better tolerate the heat.

The company has said it has interest in editing both beef and dairy cattle, swine, and fish.

Successful Farming additionally notes that before President Trump left office, his administration allowed for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to monitor and regulate genetically-engineered livestock that produces food – moving away from the FDA’s regulatory mitigation – pushed hard by the hog-farming industry.

From what I understand, I do not think this will effect the true pastured-raised cattle, farmed by ranchers that do not already inject their cattle with poisons and feed them garbage grain, rather than the proper method of grass-fed and grass-finished. But, now we have the potential for GMO-cows to slip through onto the dinner table. Therefore, be diligent; though, like I said, prudent and reputable ranchers are likely not to follow in these shenanigans.

Regulars of The WP know that I have warning about the push to get off the meats to the point of ad nauseum, and this move by the FDA to “warp-speed” in this wicked regulation is yet another indirect way of doing this, by making the cows sicker and reducing their quality. Of course, this is not considered “cruelty” when money is on the line.
