The trend to deviate away from meat products around the world continues to surge, with the Nordic nation of Finland banning meat in the capitol city of Helsinki.
On Tuesday, November 2nd, Helsinki proclaimed that meat dishes and disposable tableware would no longer be available at public events. This includes a slew of events, such as: seminars, meetings, workshops; public events, festivities in the city’s businesses and accompanying catering services, according to Finnish outlet Italehti.
The outlet says this move by the city government is to make sure ‘environmental issues are taken into account even better in catering,’ per a press release released by the capitol.
‘The city of Helsinki is aligning so that seasonal vegetarian food is served at the events, as well as possibly responsibly caught local fish. Serving may also include Fair Trade products such as coffee, tea and bananas,’ the outlet wrote. Moreover, oatmeal will substitute coffee milk for example.
Instead of cheap disposable platter, cutlery and tableware will only be used. Drinks will be served via jugs, replacing bottles.
Those also invited to catering events must make binding reservations to cut back on food waste.
The city also said the use of raw materials and animal-based products are drivers for environmental impacts affecting catering. ‘It is also affected by, among other things, food preparation, packaging, transportation, and the resulting waste.’
The capitol City Council ruled in 2019 that the city would cut its meat and dairy products and services courtesy of the city itself by 50%, by the year 2025.
This announcement has got many in Scandinavian lands talking, but even more so when it was revealed there are some exceptions to the rule.
According to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, Juhana Vartiainen (mayor of Helsinki), said that if the king of Sweden – Carl XVI Gustaf – comes to visit, then locally produced meat may be served. Moreover, if other certain groups are coming for a visit, then natural meats can be cooked up off the menu.
These new initiatives by Finland are occurring during the international climate emergency summit in Glasgow, Scotland, where some activists pointed out the hypocrisy of some of the menu items being served were not only meats, but had reportedly been over the designated carbon footprint limitations.
