Nickelodeon Going All-Out For Pride Month. Introduces Even More Sodomite Characters

Less than 2 weeks ago The WinePress reported that the children’s cartoon channel, Nickelodeon, released a sing-along song featuring a drag queen singing about the various identifications among the LGTBQIA+ community – on the show “Blue’s Clues & You.”

The children’s network, however, is doing more than just that to build advocacy for Pride Month.

‘The Meaning Of Pride’

On June 5th, the network published another music video featuring Nina West – the same drag queen depicted in the “Blue’s Clues” program – singing a song about the colors of the Pride flag, titled, “The Meaning of Pride.”

The 150-second song features West explaining the different colors of the Pride flag, describing the meaning to each color.

Reboot Features Lesbian Mom

Several days prior to the release of the sing-along for “Blues Clues,” the network announced that a returning character is now a sodomite.

The hit 90’s and early 00’s show “Rugrats” is getting a reboot and its animation style completely redesigned.

One of the popular characters of the show, Betty DeVille, mother of the toddlers Phil and Lil, has now been rewritten to be a single lesbian mother.

In the original show, the character was already established to have been a feminist, sporting the symbol for a female on her sweater, and was clearly the more dominant one in her marriage with her husband, Howard.

I think any representation for the community is important. Betty is a single mom with her own business who has twins and still has time to hang out with her friends and her community, and I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that. And yeah, Betty is a fictional cartoon, but even cartoons were hugely influential for me as a kid and if I’d been watching Rugrats and seen Betty casually talking about her ex-girlfriend, I think at least a part of me would have felt like things might be okay in the future.

I was really excited. Although I think anyone who watched the original show may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia.

I was such a big, big fan of Nickelodeon when I was a kid. Rugrats, Doug, Ah! Real Monsters, Hey, Arnold, etc. Like, I watched all of it and Rugrats was a big one. Walking into Nickelodeon studios and auditioning for this role was such a big deal to me that I framed the ID sticker they gave me at the gate. Getting the part was incredibly joyous and I pinch myself every time I get to do it.

First-Ever Transgender Teen Actor

Nickelodeon has now become the first network to feature a transgender teenage actor in one of their programs.

Michael D. Cohen, a transgender himself and writer for the network, launched in December of last year a program called the Trans Youth Acting Challenge, to aid transgender and nonbinary children the chance to leapfrog into the business.

For his Nickelodeon show, “Danger Force,” he has cast Sasha A. Cohen (no relation), a 13 year-old transgender actor, along with twin sister Natalie R. Cohen. These two actors can be seen featured on an episode scheduled to air on June 19th, an episode that Michael co-wrote and directed.

I want Sasha to see his own power as an actor and as a human. I want him to feel proud of his work and feel real confident in himself in every aspect and to know that he will help change kids’ lives by being the first kid of trans experience on Nickelodeon in live action.

I had never felt comfortable about who I am, and I always thought that I would never play a transgender role. But there are so many kids out there who need to see someone like them — a role model who has the ability to put themselves out there.

‘Cohen’s initiative has blossomed into a private Facebook page for parents and kids. Casting directors are also turning to him for leads,’ says the Variety report.

I was talking to a casting director the other day who is looking for a trans kid for a commercial for a major director. We always ask the parents first, but we were able to give him a list of 75 young actors.

We’re focusing on university students and grads to find stellar writing talent of trans experience so that we can have a database for producers and networks to draw from. I have been in conversations with a number of places, including The Writers Guild Foundation, and they are excited to be involved in the initiative.

The Network has also been making frequent social media posts to celebrate Pride Month. On the first day of June they tweeted a post of someone making “Pride pancakes.” And then on the 7th they tweeted a short commercial promoting Pride awareness and parades.
