According to a report from the Daily Star, a new microchip has been developed that researchers claim it will be able to power self-driving cars and grant drones access to “6G and beyond.”
According to the scientists, this new chip can transmit data 30 times faster than the fastest and most the state-of-the-art 5G internet of today.
The developers believe it is so fast the chip is said to download an entire Netflix film at 1,000 gigabits (1 terabit) per second.
According to the report, experts believe this new chip technology could allow robots to connect to 6G AI super-computers, performing tasks that have been previously imagined in Sci-Fi films and shows.
The new multiplexer can be mass-produced, just like computer chips, but much simpler. So large-scale market penetration is possible.
This would enable applications in 6G and beyond, as well as the Internet of Things, and low-probability-of-intercept communications between compact aircraft such as autonomous drones.

‘There are huge hopes for 5G technology to revolutionize our lives by making virtually every electrical device connect to the internet. But even that has limits and researchers say 6G is decades from allowing self-driving cars to see through walls and around corners, GPS-style tracking accuracy slashed to within a centimeter,’ says the Daily Star report.
Additionally, this chip grants mobile internet communications to transmit massive data boosts via the use of a different electrical frequency.
According to the report, the ‘new silicon “multiplexer” is designed to break up huge amounts of data into “manageable chunks” for terahertz-range communications in the 300-GHz band.’
The new microchip was developed by researchers from the Japanese Osaka University and the Australian University of Adelaide.
The new terahertz multiplexers, which are economical to manufacture, will be extremely useful for ultra-broadband wireless communications.
The shape of the chips we have developed is the key to combining and splitting channels so that more data can be processed more rapidly. Simplicity is its beauty.

The new device was able to cover a bandwidth more than 30 times designated in Japan for 4G/LTE and 5G combined. This allows ultra-high-speed digital transmission possible as it relates to data rate, explained lead author Dr. Daniel Headland from Osaka University.
Our four-channel multiplexer can potentially support aggregate data rate of 48 gigabits per second (Gbit/s), equivalent to that of uncompressed 8K ultrahigh definition video being streamed in real time.
