U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg ruled out plans on Monday to increase in the federal gas tax or charge drivers a fee based on miles driven to pay for the Biden administration’s $3 trillion infrastructure plan.
CNN asked Buttigieg asked about implementing a vehicle-miles-traveled fee in lieu of taxes paid at the gas pump. Here is what he said:
That’s not part of the conversation about this infrastructure bill. Just want to make sure that’s really clear. But you will be hearing a lot more details in the coming days about how we envision to be able to fund this.
Buttigieg also dismissed the suggestion of a gas tax increase to pay for rebuilding the nations roads, tunnels and bridges but he said measures being discussed “are carefully thought through, responsible ideas that ultimately are going to be a win for the economy.”
The comments comes as the Biden administration prepares to roll out a large infrastructure package Wednesday that is expected to cost as much as $3 trillion.
A vehicle-miles-traveled program has been suggested as a way to close the yawning gap in federal highway funding that is estimated to be as high as $16 billion this year. That’s because the Highway Trust Fund, which pays for roadway and transit systems, is financed primarily through the federal gas tax, currently 18.4 cent-per-gallon. That only brings in $34 billion per year while federal spending has topped $50 billion annually and has had to be supported by transfers from the general fund.

Just today we released a report about how Google Maps will start redirecting drivers to travel on more “eco-friendly” routes. Now, in order to pay for an asinine infrastructure plan that is just more boondoggling garbage as usual (which is just small installments of the New Green Deal), they are going to have to tax us with a mileage tax.
If this were to pass, then all that has to be done is add an additional slot on an IRS tax sheet forcing taxpayers to list their mileage. Insurance companies, some of them, have devices that plug into the computers of the vehicles that track not just mileage, but how fast the driver goes, braking patterns, you name it. The government could force insurance companies to mandate some sort of deceive that automatically logs the miles and send the data back to the insurance company. Or even the car dealer if the buyer purchases the vehicle from a new or used car lot.
Assuming this were to pass, this will spark even more uproar and many who will not pay this tax. Additionally, if some sort of tracking device is implemented (which I do not think is an unrealistic situation based on what big tech and the government is doing now with tracking and tracing), many drivers will begin to do more walking, cycling, and other “eco-friendly” activities and utilize government-approved technology. It would be a win-win for them, as we have been covering, one of the major goals is to use the climate nonsense to slowly chip away at our freedoms so we can accept more tracking, tracing, censorship, and loss of autonomy and free will.
On a final side note, “Alfred E. Newman” was former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, very close to where I live. I can tell you that Petey was, and is, a clown. South Bend is laden with shootings everyday, drugs, and ghettos outside of Notre Dame. The liberals love him, but his “infrastructural” editions were in many ways useless as all other political garbage is.
