While fears continue to rage around the world surrounding the Delta variant – which media, politicians, and health officials claim that while this variant is more infectious, the vaccines are still effective in some instances.
CDC’s Walensky Says Vaccines No Longer Prevent Transmission, But Still Work ‘Exceptionally Well’
But now the media is sounding the alarm on another variant: Lambda, which, while this reported variant has not been reported upon as often, it is now being attributed to potentially thwarting the effectiveness of the current vaccines in use.
Reported by the New York Post, and appearing in a BioRxiv report on July 28th, currently awaiting peer review before getting officially published; researchers in Japan believe that the Lambda strain is just as virulent as Delta.
It is reported that this variant is contained in 26 countries, with major outbreaks in South American nations such as Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Argentina. It also has been reported in the United States, the United Kingdom, and some parts of Asia.
Notably, the vaccination rate in Chile is relatively high; the percentage of the people who received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine was [about] 60%.
Nevertheless, a big COVID-19 surge has occurred in Chile in Spring 2021, suggesting that the Lambda variant is proficient in escaping from the antiviral immunity elicited by vaccination.
In addition to increasing viral infectivity, the Delta variant exhibits higher resistance to the vaccine-induced neutralization. Similarly, here we showed that the Lambda variant equips not only increased infectivity but also resistance against antiviral immunity.

The World Health Organization labels this strain as a “variant of interest,” as its friends – Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta – have been elevated to “variant[s] of concern.”
On July 8th, The WinePress reported the fear of the variants were rising, as Lambda was first introduced to the world; as other declared variants such as Epsilon was declared aa “triple mutant.”

Moreover, there have been other fears of variants, such as one reported to have mutated in Mexico.
