Turkey Applies To Be First NATO Member To Join BRICS

Turkey has for years been in negotiations to join the European Union, but with talks going nowhere for roughly two decades and not imposing sanctions on Russia versus its Western counterparts, and the West’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, Turkey appears to now be jumping ship.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently said, “Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously.”

“On the contrary, we have to develop our relations with both these and other organisations on a win-win basis,” he added. “Any method other than this will not benefit Turkey, but will harm it.”

According to TV BRICS, Omer Celik, the representative of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, announced during a press conference, “President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously expressed Türkiye’s desire to join BRICS. If there is a concrete development – a decision or evaluation by BRICS on membership – we will announce it.”

In June, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a visit to China, “We see potential in BRICS. […] Certainly, we would like to become a member of BRICS. So we’ll see how it goes this year,” he said.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov confirmed Turkey’s interest. “Turkey has applied for full membership. We’ll consider [this bid],” he said.

Later this year the BRICS will have its annual summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 22nd-24th, and it has been confirmed that Erdoğan will be in attendance, Turkish media has reported.

It should be noted that even though Turkey is expressing interest in joining BRICS, and Azerbaijan last month, and a long waiting list of nearly 60 other countries seeking membership, BRICS announced in August they plan to not admit any new member states this year. We’ll see if that remains true.

Turkey’s shift to joining BRICS is not surprising at all, as I personally felt it was only a matter of time before they did. However, it should be noted that even amidst the war with Israel in Gaza, Turkey is still a partner with Israel.

The simple fact is BRICS is ascending and the G7 and the global West is descending, as the American empire comes to an end as the world shifts into a multipolar setup.
