Climate Change Blamed For Vast Number Of Bees Dying, Mainstream Media Says

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Bee Science, asserts that the rate in which bee populations are shrinking is because the heat is too hot. CBS News reported: “Bumblebee nests are under attack – and it’s killing their babies,” saying, “It’s getting way too hot,” and that’s why the bees are dying. New Scientist, also citing this same study, says, “Rising temperatures are cooking bumblebee nests and killing larvae.”

The researchers from the University of Guelph in Canada explained in a press release accompanying the study states, “As a result of the climate crisis, global warming is driving up temperatures around the world — and bumblebees, like humans, are struggling to cope with homes that can’t beat the heat.”

Dr. Peter Kevan of the University of Guelph, Canada, lead author of the study, said in a statement:

The decline in populations and ranges of several species of bumblebees may be explained by issues of overheating of the nests and the brood. The constraints on the survival of the bumblebee brood indicate that heat is likely a major factor, with heating of the nest above about 35 degrees Celsius being lethal, despite the remarkable capacity of bumblebees to thermoregulate.

The study authors claim since the bees ‘may have limited evolutionary plasticity, meaning the bumblebees would find it hard to adapt to rising temperatures, and would struggle to remain within their thermal neutral zone — a point at which staying the right temperature requires minimal metabolic expenditure. Heat stress that takes a species out of this range is dangerous.’

After examining 180 years worth of literature on the subject, ‘Kevan and colleagues found that bumblebees seem to be able to survive at up to 36 degrees Celsius and develop optimally at around 30-32 degrees Celsius — though this might differ between species and biogeographical conditions.’

The effect of high nest temperatures has not been studied very much, which is surprising. We can surmise that nest temperatures above the mid-30s Celsius would likely be highly detrimental and that above about 35 Celsius death would occur, probably quite quickly.

Kevan added

Bee populations have been shrinking and living less longer than in years past, living only half as long since the 1970s. Last year U.S. honeybees suffered their second deadliest year in history. Besides climate change and global warming, scientists have posited that heavy usage of herbicides and pesticides are a major contributing factor, or things such as increases in EMF radiation.

However, interestingly enough, a study published in the journal Environment International two weeks ago argues that “Bumblebees are resilient to neonicotinoid-fungicide combinations.” In other words, the chemicals are not cause for their deaths.

Bumblebees appeared astonishingly resilient to the PPPs tested or they have developed mechanisms for detoxification. Neither learning capacity nor flight activity were inhibited by treatment with the single PPPs or their combination.

The study’s abstract says, though the researchers do acknowledge the chemical effects against honeybees.

“The experiments show that the bumblebee appears to be resilient to chemical stressors such as pesticides,” Antonia Schuhmann, first author of the study and doctoral student with Ricarda Scheiner, said.

Scheiner added: “The bumblebee benefits from its social lifestyle in the colony, which can buffer toxic effects and ensure the survival of weak individuals.”

“Of course” it’s climate change, what else would it be? (sarcasm). Bees have been doing their business in very hot heat for millennia. That’s not the cause.

Of course, it can’t be the fact that we’re spraying the crops with everything under the sun; even the EPA has even admitted to this as far back as 2016.
