The South Korean tech giant Samsung has postured that they will be building new artificial intelligence-powered semiconductor chip factories by 2030, which will not have any formal staff working the lines, and will begin to retrofit their current factories as well.

The Asia Times broke the story in January, reporting, “Samsung Electronics is planning to fully automate its semiconductor factories by 2030, with “smart sensors” set to control the manufacturing process, according to South Korean media reports. The world’s largest maker of memory chips aims to create an “artificial intelligence fab” that operates without human labor, the reports said. The ground-breaking project is reportedly already underway, the same reports said.”

Market Screener noted that “this innovation could revolutionize the semiconductor industry, potentially leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs. That transition also highlights ethical issues about AI’s role in the industry.”

Samsung utilizes a proprietary Smart Sensing System, which ;is critical for various semiconductor processes like etching, deposition, and cleaning, directly affecting the performance and yield of the chips being produced,’ Trendy Digests wrote. Additionally, the process allows for miniaturization. This allows for ‘seamless integration into existing fabs without the need for additional space—a precious commodity in cleanroom environments,’ the publication added.

Samsung is but one of many big-tech companies posturing to phase-out physical staff employees, with AI and robotics. The tech purge has been on-going since 2022 and is now going to accelerate.

  • Given that they can’t build a refrigerator not 90% likely to fail within the first year….not too sure how well they’ll be able to carry that one off. They’ve been off my list for awhile now!

  • A few years ago I bought a Samsung washing machine for $800. It lasted 2 years, with a couple of repairs in those 2 years. Never will buy another one.

So wouldn’t this AI stuff being cutting of their noses to spite their faces? If no one has a good job anymore, how will they be able to afford anything Samsung makes or anyone else for that matter? Everyone will be poor, hungry and not thinking about devices when they need money for food. I’m glad we won’t be here by 2030, but a lot of people will be still.

So won’t this be like cutting off their noses to spite their faces? If they take away all the jobs, then how are people going to afford to buy their devices and anything else for that matter? They will be worried about affording food above all else. I’m glad we won’t be here in 2030, but a lot of left behind people will be (that haven’t starved yet, or died from diseases or wild animals)

  • Okay I tried twice to get my comment to post, and it’s not showing up, so maybe you will see it two times and maybe not at all. That is aggravating when it does that and kind of often too.

And I suppose this one will post and my comments won’t.
