Escalation: Houthis Rebels Attack Supply Ships In Red Sea Causing Global Disruptions. US Leads International Coalition To Defend Area

Weeks after Israel declared war on the terrorist group Hamas on October 7th, the militant group known as the Houthis from Yemen declared war on Israel, and proceeded to launch strikes against the Israelis and U.S.-backed forces in the region. The U.S., by proxy, has been fighting on the side of terrorist group Al-Qaeda and the Saudi Arabians as they have waged a very bloody war against Yemen. The Houthis’ involvement has continually proven to be a problem in the region. On December 4th, The WinePress reported on a briefing from The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) that several U.S. commercial ships were attacked. CENTCOM indicated that they would be looking into what to do about these developments, and once again blamed Iran for backing the Houthis’.

These attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security. They have jeopardized the lives of international crews representing multiple countries around the world. We also have every reason to believe that these attacks, while launched by the Houthis in Yemen, are fully enabled by Iran. The United States will consider all appropriate responses in full coordination with its international allies and partners.

The U.S. has continuously blamed Iran for the problems. Days later deputy White House national security adviser Jon Finer announced new sanctions levied against Iranian officials and persons of interest, blaming them for funding the Houthis. Iran has denied involvement.

[The Houthis] would not have the weaponry, would not have the intelligence, would not have the motivation to do this, were it not for the role of the IRGC.

They’re involved in the conduct of these attacks, the planning of them, the execution of them, the authorization of them, and ultimately, they support them.

Finer told an Aspen Security Forum conference in Washington, using the acronym for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Since then more commercial ships have come under fire, as reported by shipping outlet gCaptain across a number of articles. Because of the attacks, many commercial ships and companies have decided to not travel the Red Sea and use the critical trade route of the Suez Canal, which has therefore created a number of delays and price fluctuations in a number of commodities.

Then announced last week, the Pentagon initiated “Operation Prosperity Guardian” to re-free the critical maritime routes that the world relies on. In a press release published by the Department of Defense (DoD) on December 18th, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin explained the operation:

This is an international challenge that demands collective action. Therefore, today I am announcing the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, an important new multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of its Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea.

Operation Prosperity Guardian is bringing together multiple countries to include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain, to jointly address security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with the goal of ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries and bolstering regional security and prosperity.

Days later on December 21st, Pentagon Spokesperson Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided some more details into the operation, where he too, again, blamed the “Iranian proxy group” manipulating operations.

[The nations must come together] to address this issue collectively, emphasizing that this is an international problem that requires an international response.  

In the days ahead, the United States will continue to consult closely with our allies and partners who share the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation, and we expect to see the coalition continue to grow.

It’s very important to understand that the Houthis aren’t attacking just one country, they’re really attacking the international community. They are attacking the economic well-being and prosperity of nations around the world. So in effect, they really become bandits along the international highway that is the Red Sea.

Last thing I’d say on this is that the Houthis need to stop these attacks, and they need to stop them now. That’s clear and simple. They really need to ask themselves if they’ve bitten off more than they can chew, when it comes to taking on the entire international community and negatively impacting billions and billions, billions of dollars in global trade, economic prosperity and international law.

But, a number of nations, including that of Spain, Italy, and France would not be officially taking part in Operation Prosperity Guardian, contrary to initial reports issued by the Pentagon.

Iran has again repeatedly denied their involvement. Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in a news conference in Tehran said on December 23rd, “The accusation is baseless.” The attacks are “a completely Yemeni decision in support and defense of Gaza,” he said.

There’s no need for a coalition. They stop supporting the murderous Israeli regime and they will see a safer region and a better situation even for the transfer of energy.

However, the Houthis thus far have remained undeterred, and just today it was reported that yet another attack was made against a shipping vessel, the Houthis said, in a purported failed attempt to strike Israel with drone strikes. Reuters reported:

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea in a televised address said the group had targeted the vessel, which he identified as the MSC United, after the crew failed to respond to warnings.

He also said the Houthis had carried out a military operation targeting Eilat and other areas in Israel, which he referred to as occupied Palestine. He did not say whether any of the targets were successfully hit.

U.S. fighter jets, a navy destroyer and other assets shot down in the Red Sea 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles, and two cruise missiles fired by the Houthis, U.S. Central Command said. There was no damage to ships and no reported injuries, it wrote on social media platform X.

This war is unsurprisingly expanding as the world continues to protest Israel’s actions, and the United States’ typical two-faced pseudo-pacifism. Indeed, the disruptions are important to note, but they are only going to get far worse should this war continue to branch out, which I suspect that it will in 2024. And, America’s foaming at the mouth about Iran should again be noted, as they are looking for a new boogieman to justify a larger war with.
