Whitney Wolfe Herd, CEO of the popular dating app Bumble, intends to use artificial intelligence to help create better connections and unique matches, including coaching users in dating and relationships, along with saving users from swiping too much.

Speaking at the Code Conference 2023, Wolfe Herd explained that the company had already been using AI to a certain degree, but now seeks to leverage it’s greater use; though she denied that Bumble would go as far as to create AI avatars for users to date and interact with, like so many other apps like Replika do.

“I think that’s where I’m spending a lot of my energy and time. I’m quite obsessed with AI at the moment,” Wolfe Herd said. She added, “I think this is something that is lost on the general public, maybe, because our matching algorithms are AI-driven. This is machine learning. This is how we understand relevance and compatibility,” she said.

Explaining the how and why for further investment in more intuitive AI solutions, the CEO said:

I would really think about AI as a supercharger to love and relationships. I want to be very clear, we are not intending on replacing humans with bots. We are not intending for people to fall in love in the sci-fi version of a digital boyfriend, girlfriend, [or] partner.

What we will do, however, is we will really lead with the customers’ pain points and reducing friction, reducing things that stress a customer out.

And only if those other matchmakers triggered a certain level of compatibility would it bring it back to the human. So now, instead of you having to swipe and match and chat with dozens of people to find someone who’s compatible for you, you can, in fact only talk to the three people that came back as qualified individuals for what you’re looking for. So you can really leverage AI to supercharge compatibility and that’s just on the matching side of things.

I think that we are in a really interesting opportunity, in a moment, that can leverage AI and human connection, and the intersection is really fascinating.

She also indicated that ‘other means of using AI could involve image recognition techniques — like being able to see that someone enjoys eating at the same restaurant as you from photos — or using AI to set up dates by placing the reservation,’ Tech Crunch reported.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

Dating apps in general have always kind of sketched me out. I was raised to interact with people in real life, so chatting with people over the internet has always been odd to me at times; plus, as a lost man, for a time I used to catfish people in secret, so knowing that I am a bit weirded-out by dating apps.

Putting that aside, once again we see AI taking over something to “improve” our lives; and per usual, I just see this ending badly as more people continue to embrace the technology.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

  • Cool, just trust your phone or laptop to set ya up with a wife, nothing strange here is there?!
Gen_2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Notice the last word in passage “flesh” that is how mankind does it not by some programmed bot of some woman; she don’t know dung does she.

  • Had to look up what you meant by “to catfish”. I remember a few years back there’s this site my former friend went to, to get dates, “Plenty of Fish”. So he would view a girl’s profile picture, shot at an angle (camera is above the girl’s head) , but he said when he met her in person, she would be like twice the weight and size, far from what he was expecting.
