Hammond Indiana Passes Law To Shutdown All Gas Stations At Night To Reduce Crime. *Update*

Last month The WinePress reported that the town of Hammond, sandwiched between Gary, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois, was considering an ordinance that would forcibly ban all gas stations from operating at night, in a bid to reduce crime. That proposal has now recently passed.

According to WGN 9, ‘Beginning on November 1st, all 37 gas stations in the city will be required to close from midnight to 5 a.m.’ The ordinance passed with a 7-2 vote.

‘The ordinance would allow any gas station to petition for an exception to the midnight to 5 a.m. closure rule. However, gas stations would be subjected to a separate citation for every day it’s in violation,’ the outlet also noted.

Hammond Police Chief Andy Short and other officers provided their opinion at the hearings in favor of the ordinance.

One employee said this could cost people their jobs. “The people that are only available to work overnights, people with children, there’s all kinds of reasons, so they’re going to lose their employment,” said Gerri Spencer.

On July 26, a 22-year-old man was critically wounded at a Speedway gas station in the 6800 block of Calumet Avenue.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported that a man was carjacked at gunpoint at a Luke’s gas station in the 5100 block of State Line Avenue on Sunday. Additionally, a gas station in the 1400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard was robbed on Friday.

This would affect most of the city’s 37 stations.

Hammond’s mayor says violent crime is happening late at night at the city’s gas stations. He pointed to a murder that happened just last month at a gas station.

This is just a proposal right now. But if it does go through, Hammond’s gas stations would be required to close from midnight to 5 a.m.

The city council will meet on Monday to consider the ordinance.

Hammond is basically nestled between Chicago, Illinois, and Gary, Indiana; two cities infamously for their violence, murder, and theft, so it is no surprise at all to see this transpire here, as the city itself is also low-income across the board.

Last December The WP reported on a case where a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, gas station owner hired private guns to protect his station. That’s how absurd this is all getting, because crime is getting so out of control; and police don’t want to police, either because they are understaffed and underfunded and over-restricted, or they just don’t care.
