Adding onto the state’s ban on sales of new gas-vehicles by 2035, California has now become the first in the world to ban the sale of new diesel trucks by one year after the end date for the vehicle ban, in a purported bid to reduce emission levels.

Instead, big rigs and trucks must make the transition to electric, according to NBCDFW. This would also include things like garbage trucks, delivery trucks, and more.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced the unanimous vote on April 28th, in a move to facilitate the transition toward zero-emission medium-and-heavy duty vehicles.

The new act referred to as the Advanced Clean Fleets mandates that all new truck sales must shift to zero emissions by 2036, namely the larger of polluting trucks.

CARB explained more of the details in their press release:


Under the new rule, fleet owners operating vehicles for private services such as last-mile delivery and federal fleets such as the Postal Service, along with state and local government fleets, will begin their transition toward zero-emission vehicles starting in 2024.

The rule includes the ability to continue operating existing vehicles through their useful life. Due to the impact that truck traffic has on residents living near heavily trafficked corridors, drayage trucks will need to be zero-emissions by 2035. 

All other fleet owners will have the option to transition a percentage of their vehicles to meet expected zero-emission milestones, which gives owners the flexibility to continue operating combustion -powered vehicles as needed during the move toward cleaner technology.

The flexibility is intended to take into consideration the available technology and the need to target the highest-polluting vehicles. For example, last mile delivery and yard trucks must transition by 2035, work trucks and day cab tractors must be zero-emission by 2039, and sleeper cab tractors and specialty vehicles must be zero-emission by 2042.


Under the initial combustion engine for cars ban by CARB, the rule also affected trucks and big rigs but provided more time for the transition to 2045, but that now has been slashed.

Other states have legally adopted California’s lead on that gas-powered car ban, so it is possible that those same participatory states will also enforce a similar ban. ‘For instance, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Colorado have already adopted the California’s Advanced Clean Trucks rule,’ NBC pointed out.

We have the technology available to start working toward a zero-emission future now. The Advanced Clean Fleets rule is a reasonable and innovative approach to clean up the vehicles on our roads and ensure that Californians have the clean air that they want and deserve.

At the same time, this rule provides manufacturers, truck owners and fueling providers the assurance that there will be a market and the demand for zero-emissions vehicles, while providing a flexible path to making the transition toward clean air.

CARB Chair Liane Randolph said

California continues to lead by example with first-of-its-kind standards to slash air pollution and toxics from heavy-duty trucks. Where you live, work, or go to school should not determine the quality of the air you breathe.

Yana Garcia, California’s Secretary for Environmental Protection, said

‘The large truck manufacturers and the trucking industry have strongly opposed such legislation, saying that the deadlines are unrealistic and the cost of making a truck electric is currently too high,’ OilPrice.com reported.

California’s CARB just recently issued a ban on trains and locomotives from using fossil fuels, as they too must make the transition to electric by 2035, with government red tape and regulations already set to take effect by 2024, all to the chagrin of railroad unions and companies.

The amount of food and supply chain shortages and hiccups this is going to cause, on top of the train emissions regulations (assuming no one challenges this and is potential struck down in court), will be grand and systemic for years to come. No, this will not happen overnight, but as the transition begins across the country the effects will be detrimental.

Again, I say it all the time: the green agenda is not about saving the environment and our health; it’s about control and destabilizing the current system so the new can be implemented.
