In April of last year Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced the “Online News Act,” or House of Commons bill C-18, which would demand that tech companies like Google or Meta accommodate deals and pay news publishers for their content materials. The bill has not be passed as law but the possibility that it might draws nigh.
A Google spokesperson confirmed this test to Reuters, to ban some news content in Canada in respect of this potential law – who said:
We’re briefly testing potential product responses to Bill C-18 that impact a very small percentage of Canadian users. We run thousands of tests each year to assess any potential changes to Search.

Reuters said that ‘the tech-giant confirmed that the time-limited tests, which impact a random sampling of less than 4% of the users in Canada, “limit the visibility of Canadian and international news to varying degrees,”‘ the spokesperson added.
In February of 2021 Facebook, before the parent company was renamed to Meta, censored the entire country of Australia and blocked all news on their platform for the country. This was eventually reversed soon thereafter, but was prompted by an identical law that Australia was trying to pass similar to Canada’s now. Since then Australia’s law passed and Facebook and the country were able to patch together some sort of agreement.
A spokeswoman for Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez did not appreciate Google’s actions and said Canadians would not be intimidated.
Canadians need to have access to quality, fact-based news at the local and national levels, and that’s why we introduced the Online News Act. Tech giants need to be more transparent and accountable to Canadians.
In the summer of last year Trudeau’s government also sought to pass “C-11” that would only allow curated content and news by the government to be allowed within its borders. But even YouTube (which is owned by Google) pushed back against this and urged the Canadian parliament to reconsider. Other Canadian content creators shot back as well.
Meta has also threatened to enact a similar action to the U.S. just like they did to Australia, if Congress passes the Journalism Competition And Preservation Act – a bill that would create media mafia to protect the large corporations and force-out small and independent journalists from getting any traction or revenues from social media.

I’ve been finding Nathaniel T. Jeanson’s y-chromosome tracing work in genetics & history fascinating along these lines.
