The nation’s Energy Minister, Leonore Gewessler, said in a series of tweets why moving away from fossil fuels for heating is a necessity:
The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has shown how vulnerable our #Energieversorgung is. The answer to that can only be: get out of Russian gas. With the #Erneuerbaren heat law (#EWG) we now take another big step on this way.
By 2040 we will all switch #Heizungen in [Austria] to climate-friendly alternatives. Oil boiler or gas boiler out, #Fernwärme , #Wärmepumpen or #Pelletheizung in. And we start immediately. From 2023, #Gasheizungen may no longer be installed in new buildings.
With #EWG we decided today in #Ministerrat the timetable for this major project. And of course we also support this with grants. Around two billion euros will be available for new climate-friendly #Heizungen systems by 2026.
Assuming this bill passes, Euractiv reports that electric heat pumps, solar power, and district heating are some of the accepted alternatives. ‘Biomass-based pellet heaters are also popular with people and policymakers,’ the outlet added.
Euractiv added,
‘As of 2023, fossil heaters are banned from new buildings and broken oil and coal heating systems must be replaced with climate-friendly heaters as of 2025. Starting with oil heating systems built before 1980, the government has set the target of no private oil and coal heaters until 2035, and before 2040, all gas heating must be replaced. The new renewable heat law requires a two-thirds majority in parliament as it will change the country’s constitution.’
Austria’s ambitions are aligned with preestablished climate goals, to wit the Absolute Zero framework:
Electric heat pumps replace gas boilers, and building retrofits (air tightness, insulation and external shading) expand rapidly [by 2030]. [By 2050], Program to provide all interior heat with heat pumps and energy retrofits for all buildings.
Gas cookers phased out rapidly in favor of electric hobs and ovens. Fridges, freezers and washing machines become smaller [by 2030]. [By 2050], Electrification of all appliances and reduction in size to cut power requirement.
[By 2030], Rapid reduction in supply and use of all fossil fuels, except for oil for plastic production. Fossil fuels completed phased out [by 2050].
Earlier this year The WinePress reported that other European nations are looking to implement similar bans, such as Switzerland openly considering arresting people who heat their homes above a certain temperature whilst outlawing the purchase of portable heaters.
Moreover, the state of California has also banned the use of natural gas heaters and furnaces by the year 2030.
