A new prize was added to the wheel: four months of energy bills paid for in full.
Viewers were shocked to see this as a new prize option. The contestant on the phone said he has one of these “pre-payment meters and it’s absolutely murder.” The wheel landed on the energy bills and the contestant was relieved.
Scott Bryan, TV critic and broadcaster, took to social media to share his shock:
#ThisMorning has turned completely dystopian and Black Mirror by offering to pay energy bills as a competition prize.
Honestly I’ve never seen anything so tone deaf in all my life.
Clearly this has resonated. I reached out for comment to ITV about the reaction / decision to air this but did not receive anything back.
And as pointed out here, could this competition clash with Ofcom guidelines?
Ofcom: “We would strongly advise broadcasters not to present a monetary prize as a possible resolution of financial difficulty (e.g. as a means of paying off credit card debt). See also Rule 2.1.”
The United Kingdom division of the Huffington Post reported on a handful of Twitter users who were concerned when they saw this, also using the word ‘dystopian.’

The media is obviously trying to maximize the animosity and terror in people. The problem is real, and it is something that regulars of The WP knew was coming; but the media is now blowing things out of proportion. They need people in a state of helplessness. If you can get them to be scared, in regards to their wallets and purses especially, they are made even more docile and fickle than before. Fear has always been the greatest control mechanism.
I would not be shocked if this becomes a prize on “The Price is Right,” “Let’s Make A Deal,” and “Wheel of Fortune.”

I HATE game shows! A bunch of greedy buffoons making fools out of themselves on TV worshipping mammon and coveting. Some slick looking well suited host and some co-host looking like a harlot. What a waste.
