And even though citizens are being permitted to return to some sort of normalcy and reopening businesses, many business owners in Shanghai are refusing to open, and rather took to the streets to protest against their landlords demanding that their rents be exempted for at least the next 6 months.

By Tuesday, the operator of one of two major malls in the area agreed to the six-month rent waiver, and the other said it would negotiate with shop owners on relief.’
Small businesses in China are at their wits end, and mostly on the precipice of folding up, as many are faced with making the decision to pack it in.
We have run out of funds to keep the small shops alive. Suspension over the past three months and bleak business outlook due to the stringent virus-control measures have exhausted our patience because the shops are already on the brink of collapse.
We cannot survive unless the market can return to normal in just a few weeks. But it will not happen overnight because clients out of Shanghai are not coming back to Qipu Road soon due to the quarantine requirements.

Small businesses are in a do-or-die situation, and their request is not unreasonable. Aside from the rental cost, they also suffered losses from the inventory and salaries paid to employees.

‘A total of 2.67 million companies, most of them small businesses – usually defined as those that pay less than 300,000 yuan in annual taxes – are registered in Shanghai,’ the Chinese outlet noted.
Even though the sharp lockdowns are lifted, there are still many restrictions levied against small businesses still in place, that force business to struggle to serve customers, while having to layoff more employees.

Just like with the first times these lockdowns were initiated in China, and elsewhere all over the world, one of the primary goals of them is to destroy the middle class and end small business. Hence, “You’ll own nothing and be happy.” Therefore all this contraction must occur.
