First reported by Motor Authority, Ford filed for the patent in January 2023, called “Systems and Methods for Detecting Speeding Violations,” and was recently granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 18th, 2024.
Motor Authority wrote:
‘In the application, Ford discusses using cars to monitor each other’s speeds. If one car detects that a nearby vehicle is being driven above the posted limit, it could use onboard cameras to photograph that vehicle. A report containing both speed data and images of the targeted vehicle could then be sent directly to a police car or roadside monitoring units via an Internet connection, according to Ford.’
The outlet adds: ‘Using vehicles for speed surveillance would make cops’ jobs easier, as they wouldn’t have to quickly identify speeding violations and take off in pursuit, Ford notes in the application. It also means some of that work could be delegated to self-driving cars, which could be equipped to detect speeding violations, the automaker adds.’
Automobile outlet Driving however noted that the patent vaguely says the transmission of these records and driving data to police ‘seems to relegate only to instances where the snitching car is also “a law enforcement vehicle,” though elsewhere in the patent (please turn to page 9) it broadens that definition to cover, in some cases, “any of various types of vehicles operated by various types of agencies,” including those driven by an “emergency services responder” or “private security officer.”’
While this raises the question of what a non-government-owned or -operated vehicle would do with the sort of “record” captured by this system, at the very least it does sound like the engineer at Ford behind this patent was perhaps thinking of it more as a means to simplify cop-to-cop communication, and less so as a way to turn every new Ford on the street into a tattletale.

Nevertheless, Driver called this “dystopian.” Guy adds, ‘We think it is at this point any reasonable outlet is obliged to quote Jeff Goldbum’s character Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”’
The Drive also expressed concern, saying, ‘You don’t need us to sound alarms over the implicit slipperiness of this slope, potentially mobilizing non-police cars to snitch on the rest of the public.’
In a statement to Motor Authority, a Ford spokesman said:
The patent explicitly states this idea is specific for application in law enforcement vehicles, such as the Ford Police Interceptor, and it’s a system that would automate a capability that law enforcement already have in use today, except this would utilize the built-in system and sensors in the vehicle.
This patent does not state that driving data from customers’ vehicles would be shared with law enforcement, which is what some media have incorrectly reported. And note, patent applications are intended to protect new ideas but aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.
But Motor Authority says their ‘reading of the patent leaves unanswered questions about the limit and scope of its language—which seems to leave law enforcement use as one of many possible use cases.’
Over the last several years, Ford Motor Co. has filed some other obtuse patents that have drawn criticism.
In 2023, Ford was granted a patent that allows their vehicles to autonomously drive themselves back to the lot if the owner failed to make the necessary payments. In May of this year, Ford filed a patent for a facial recognition entry system. The vehicle giant has also looking into patenting a “night drive mode” that would limit vehicle speeds at night for all drivers – including first responders and emergency crew.

Well, I suppose there’s a reason why Henry Ford was awarded an Iron Cross by Hitler and the Nazis…
Owning a modern vehicle (which really means leasing; or by the time you pay it off the vehicle, it has already fallen apart and is criminally undervalued), is basically paying for slavery and oppression. There is no fun in owning, driving, and repairing a car anymore. These megacorporations have made sure to redefine what ownership means, and the right-to-repair it; and if Ford has patented this then I’m sure other major manufacturers will try something similar, or Ford will license the technology for a hefty price to the government.
Lesson here: don’t buy a modern vehicle.

Most people will not buy a vehicle that rats them out for speeding! How stupid the engineers at Ford must be! And who knows what else the vehicle will report on the owner? I know I would never personally buy anything like this, but then again we live in the last days and CONTROL is the name of the game. Soon the ultimate “controller” will step on the world stage. And if the BAC is above the legal limit, the car will refuse to start as a robotic voice says “your blood alcohol content is above the legal limit for the driver to safely operate this vehicle. Please find a designated driver and try again once the blood alcohol content is at normal levels.”
And then they get an Uber while the 2028 breathalyzer equipped vehicle automatically goes into anti-theft mode – with a camera. Somebody tries to steal it or even steal the catalytic converter, an alarm will sound and it will notify local law enforcement.
Dont buy Ford. Simple.

The irony is that every one of us carries a smartphone with us and uses Google Maps. Maps has a speed limit indicator as well as an option to show you your current speed. Unless you’ve turned it off then it’s on by default. If you turn it off do you think Google doesn’t still collect that data? It’s only a matter of time before those records are requested regularly as well and tickets issued based on that.

Speak for yourself. This is one of the many reasons I own a flip phone and use paper maps (remember those?). Some few of us have not and will not buy into the surveillance society. I know they have other ways, but I will not participate any more than I am forced to. Collectively we are putting that noose around our own necks.
If Ford wants to increase sales dramatically – they should be aware there is a 20 year exclusive right for this patent. If Ford were to charge anyone $ 1 million per violation and prevent Ford Vehicles from someone installing such a device on their cars – this would leave all other car companies open to having this installed on their cars, unless the other car companies but rights to this patent which would include an agreement not to install it on their cars – Ford could charge each company a price per car for not installing said device – giving a big advantage to Ford on pricing.

Despite the article claiming the intended use of said Patent – this intended claim cannot be enforced. Once an invention is published it can be modified by another Patent Application and if an Allowance is given, then the new Patent Holder can use it for any intended purpose the new Holder has in mind. Further if Ford sells rights to another, the Patent can be used with the intent of the one purchasing rights unless Ford puts in restrictions that are enforceable (but not likely). After 20 years upon Patent Expiration – said Patent is open to the entire World as they see fit.

The author is being stupid making the comment that this must be the reason the Henry Ford was awarded the Iron Cross by Germany in the 1930’s. Perhaps the author doesn’t realize that Henry Ford died in 1947 and the Ford company today has little to do with the company then.
