Yesterday parts of the world were sent into disarray and confusion after a failed update from cybersecurity firm CloudStrike essentially ‘bricked’ a huge number of computers and technical operations, creating all sorts of delays and inoperability across multiple fields in what is being regarded as the worst IT outage in history.

This event caused a simultaneous cascading event of people receiving the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) after CloudStrike’s update.

The company said in a blog post that was not a “cyber attack.”

The company added: “We understand how this issue occurred and we are doing a thorough root cause analysis to determine how this logic flaw occurred. This effort will be ongoing. We are committed to identifying any foundational or workflow improvements that we can make to strengthen our process. We will update our findings in the root cause analysis as the investigation progresses.”

Popular tech channel Fireship provides a brief overview of the situation. The host described the situation as “the IT guy equivalent to a surgeon in World War I.” Fireship also explained the event has revealed just how dangerous it is for a company to manage cybersecurity for most of the world’s Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, and how a misplaced ‘0’ in the code can shut most of the world off in an instant.

The Washington Post cited Bruce Schneier, a security technologist who teaches at the Harvard Kennedy School, who said the latest problem shows how brittle parts of the online world have become as companies have chased efficiency while sacrificing resiliency.

“This is one of hundreds of companies you’ve never heard of that are essential to the functioning internet,” Schneier said. He compared the situation to a house built in such a way that nailing a picture to the wall puts it at risk of collapsing.

Business Insider compiled a broad list of businesses and services affected, which included several major airlines and airports, some 911 lines, hospitals and doctor’s offices, New York City subways, broadcasters such as Sky News, the London Stock Exchange, delivery services, fast food chains, hotels and more.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

This event goes to show just how vulnerable and fragile the current system is, and how we all take these modern conveniences for granted. Most Americans, and really the world for that matter, just think everything is hunky dory, and the idea of having a modicum of preparedness in place should something serious and prolonged occur is silly, and now some of them just got a small dose of reality (if they’re smart that is).

But what happens when the whole grid goes down and stays down? What will you do then? Again, I continue to remind readers that an eventual debilitating grid-down scenario via cyberattack, hacking, or EMP WILL occur in the not-so distant future, and it will be blamed on some foreign entity – Russia, China, Iran, North Korea. Count on it.

World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab has said that a “cyber pandemic” would make Covid look like child’s play in terms of catastrophe and turning the world upside down.

Let this be a helpful reminder to be sure to have the necessary preparations in place should this come to pass – ways to make heat and fire, dry goods, plenty of water for drinking and cleaning, extra clothing, medical gear, ammunition and protection, extra fuel, batteries and power banks, etc.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

  • My money is so secure in banks!

Oops, I did a software update to all Tesla programs and now the cars won’t work!

Good reminder to keep just a little bit of money in the banks and have most of it in cash.

  • Hey brother Jacob could you maybe write a short article on some good items to snatch up for preparedness? Thanks for all you do. God bless

  • The IT crews are tasked with doing safety checks on the system before updates occur. Those updates test if the system can handle the update program without making the system going down. The system shouldn’t go live until those checks have been done. I just don’t believe that this was an accident. It seemed more like a test. With a few loops in the program you can control travel, banking, hospital care etc. Ultimately, the anti-Christ will use the tools of these programs to exert control upon those who do not want to take the knee for him.
