Yesterday Cal-Maine Foods, Inc., announced that roughly ‘1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets, about 3.6% of its total flock, were destroyed after the infection, avian influenza, was found at the facility in Parmer County, Texas.’ This is the largest fresh egg producer in the U.S.
“The company continues to work closely with federal, state and local government officials and focused industry groups to mitigate the risk of future outbreaks and effectively manage the response,” the company said in their statement. “Cal-Maine Foods is working to secure production from other facilities to minimize disruption to its customers.”
The company claims there is no known avian flu risk with the current supply of eggs at stores, and no eggs have been recalled as of yet.
This is absolutely devastating news for Cal-Maine and the entire Panhandle region which has already suffered so much already. Given this latest development, all producers must practice heightened biosecurity measures. The rapid spread of this virus means we must act quickly.
The current risk to the public remains minimal. It is important for us as an industry to maintain a high level of vigilance. State and national agencies will continue to provide updated guidance as developments warrant.
Commissioner Sid Miller, Texas Department of Agriculture, said in a release.
This news comes just after another egg processing facility in Michigan was reportedly discovered to have a bird flu contamination. MLive reported: ‘A highly contagious deadly bird flu has been detected at Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, one of the nation’s top egg producers and the biggest poultry farm in Michigan. This is Michigan’s fourth commercial poultry farm to be infected since the highly pathogenic avian influenza started spreading in 2022.’
The outlet also noted: ‘Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, which confirmed the infection at Green Meadow Organics, did not disclose how many of their birds were affected. The generational family farm has a flock of 10 million birds across facilities in Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania. They supply eggs to grocery stores across the Midwest and sold 56 million dozen eggs to McDonald’s in 2021.’
As the weather remains cool and wild birds continue their migration, conditions are ideal for the virus to thrive and spread. While these conditions persist, the need to take preventative measures will be high. Keeping HPAI out of Michigan’s domestic animals remains a team effort, and it must be a top priority for all.
State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland said in a statement.
Prior to this news, last week it was reported that a few cases of bird flu were detected in milk samples in different parts of the U.S., one man reportedly contracting the virus, the second time this has ever happened.
Science magazine said in an article: ‘The bird flu virus that has wreaked havoc around the world appears to have surfaced in U.S. dairy cows, the first time this viral subtype has been documented in any cattle. Three U.S. states—Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico—on 25 March reported cows sickened with what scientists are presuming is the same H5N1 strain of influenza that has killed hundreds of millions of poultry and wild birds.’
The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said in their press release on March 25th, that “farms have also reported finding deceased wild birds on their properties,” which they say the flu may have been introduced by wild birds.” The USDA added that “initial testing by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories has not found changes to the virus that would make it more transmissible to humans, which would indicate that the current risk to the public remains low.”
At this stage, there is no concern about the safety of the commercial milk supply or that this circumstance poses a risk to consumer health. […] Pasteurization has continually proven to inactivate bacteria and viruses, like influenza, in milk. Pasteurization is required for any milk entering interstate commerce.
The USDA added
Dr. Jim Lowe, a veterinarian and influenza researcher at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, told the New York Times that ‘the milk was described as thick and syrupy.’
In a statement to Science, the USDA said that “testing from Texas shows consistency with the strain seen in wild birds,” and that federal and state researchers are quickly trying to complete genetic testing.
Moreover, Gregory Gray, an epidemiologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch, told Science that this recent discovery is “worrisome” and “disturbing,” suggesting that the virus is now “airborne.”
It’s worrisome. We most recently saw the infections in goats, and we’ve all seen the wildlife being affected with the hotter pathogenic avian flu, including the strange infection of carnivores—bears and wolves. Who knows what’s next? It’s disturbing.
We need to figure this thing out, because if the virus continues to change, it could move into other species, including humans. It may be in humans already. We just have to keep a pulse on it. And if we don’t work together with agriculture, we won’t know very well what’s circulating.

Or is it simply a respiratory pathogen that is moving through direct contact from cattle to cattle? On Monday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported that a man had contracted bird flu, after the anonymous man came in contact with an infected cow, but only had experienced eye inflammation, according to tests by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This is the second human case of H5N1 flu in the United States and the first linked to an exposure to cattle, the CDC says.
Dr. Céline Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, said on “CBS Mornings:”
This person has a very mild case — just conjunctivitis, which is pinkeye. That’s important to emphasize because it’s not in the lungs, it’s not pneumonia, which would make it easier to transmit from person to person.

If you have been in contact with an infected bird or an infected cow, or you’ve had direct contact with somebody who has this, then you need to be concerned.
Even so, the mainstream media publications are still querying if the milk supply is safe for now, and if this virus could infect more people.
Initial testing by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories has not found changes to the virus that would make it more transmissible to humans, which would indicate that the current risk to the public remains low.
Federal and state agencies are moving quickly to conduct additional testing for HPAI, as well as viral genome sequencing, so that we can better understand the situation, including characterization of the HPAI strain or strains associated with these detections.
The USDA, FDA and CDC said last Friday.
Caitlyn Rivers, an Epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told CBS an interview that this is one of the viruses that “likes to change and mutate, and we know that it has the potential to cause a pandemic.”
Moreover, Andrew Bowman, a molecular epidemiologist and influenza expert at Ohio State University, told the New York Times that other scientists have warned that a ‘bird flu virus that evolved to spread more efficiently among mammals, including humans, could set off the next pandemic.’
Though the risks are purportedly still low, Fox News suggested some ‘mitigation strategies include receiving the annual influenza vaccine for those who qualify, and not going out among other people while feeling ill.’
If there are repeated contacts between species that are the natural reservoir for one type of influenza viral strain — like birds and H5N1 — and humans, the chances of this novel strain adapting to spread in this different species increases.
Erica Susky, a Toronto-based medical microbiologist certified in infection control, told Fox
In an interview with the Associated Press, CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen claimed that unlike Covid, bird flu is not novel, and that they have been long preparing for a potential bird flu outbreak, which includes the deployment of “vaccines, treatment and tests for quite a number of years.” Nevertheless, Cohen stated the CDC is watching very intently with this latest development, waiting to see if there is viral mutation, specifically if it causes human-to-human spread, since this is the first time this has ever been recorded.
As we’ve all learned through Covid, these viruses change very quickly, so we are needing to watch it closely, we have to sequence these, we have to stay ahead of it.

This ataxia concerning this latest outbreak has been aired and publicized quite rapidly across the U.S. and around the world, supplanting the fear of the unknowns, especially contamination of the food supply and human-to-human spread potential.
Furthermore, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued an alert about this outbreak this week, in an alert titled “Drivers for a pandemic due to avian influenza and options for One Health mitigation measures.” Vaccination is a listed method for a control.
These viruses continue to evolve globally, and with the migration of wild birds, new strains carrying potential mutations for mammalian adaptation could be selected. If avian A(H5N1) influenza viruses acquire the ability to spread efficiently among humans, large‐scale transmission could occur due to the lack of immune defences against H5 viruses in humans. The emergence of AIV capable of infecting mammals, including humans, can be facilitated by various drivers.
Key options for actions include enhancing surveillance targeting humans and animals, ensuring access to rapid diagnostics, promoting collaboration between animal and human sectors, and implementing preventive measures such as vaccination. Effective communication to different involved target audiences should be emphasised, as well as strengthening veterinary infrastructure, enforcing biosecurity measures at farms, and reducing wildlife contact with domestic animals.

How long have I been warning about this?! Regulars of The WP know that I have REPEATEDLY been sounding-off on this very thing; that the media is now blitzing the world with right now, and all this fearmongering about contamination and spreading among livestock populations, and eventually to people.
Now, how much of this is even legitimate in of itself? Probably very little. It’s the narrative and spin job that I’m talking about.
Dr. Joseph Mercola had quoted my earlier predictions about this years ago in an article, and in one part I had written, “… did you catch that little subtle influence and propaganda of COVID in animals transmitting to us? It is becoming clearer that that is where the narrative is heading … The wicked handlers need to get the masses off of meats, and so, the ‘solution’ will be to artificially kill them off, vaccinate them to death, and mandate it be taken off the shelves.”
And here we are now, exactly as I have been saying for years. The ultimate goal is to get the masses to stop eating meat, so this “next pandemic” will be used to achieve that goal, by initiating mass cullings at farms across the Western nations; clamp down on small independent farmers that are not pasteurizing milk, for example; remove meat and dairy products from the store shelves; and all kinds of taxes and stipulations on purchasing them.

And, as I suspect, when the go-ahead has been given to put the plan into overdrive, I suspect mostly the people getting really sick will be the people who received the “safe and effective” vaccines these past years…
