Legislation that would forbid food processors from labeling imitation meat products with words associated with butchered meat received early support Wednesday in the Iowa House.

The following report is by Iowa Capital Dispatch:

Senate File 2391 would establish fines for businesses that manufacture, package and label foods for sale in stores when their products lead to consumer confusion about whether the products contain meat from livestock. Violations can incur fines of up to $10,000.

The bill was supported unanimously in the Senate last week after it was amended to remove a prohibition on regent university research into meat substitutes.

But the bill retained a provision that would prevent schools, community colleges and universities from purchasing the “misbranded” meat products and lab-grown meat.

According to the bill, misbranded products are those that are derived from plants, insects or cultivated meat that are labeled with words such as: cow, chicken, meat, beef, broiler, drumstick, wing and several others. There are exceptions for labels that also contain “a conspicuous and prominent qualifying term” such as fake, imitation or vegetarian.

A House subcommittee voted 2-1 on Wednesday to recommend the bill for further discussion.

Rep. Monica Kurth, D-Davenport, did not support the bill because of its restriction on food purchases by schools. She said House Democrats have mixed opinions about the restriction but that there is widespread support for the rest of the bill’s provisions.

“The labeling I was in favor of,” she said.

Rep. Heather Hora, R-Washington, who led the subcommittee, said the legislation is necessary to ensure consumers know what they are buying.

“Iowa farmers work hard every day to bring nutritious real meat to market,” she said. “Lab-grown products are not the same as the high-quality beef, pork or other meats raised by Iowa farm families.”

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; [3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. [4] For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: [5] For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Should this Iowa bill eventually pass it may have greater ramifications on the rest of the country and what companies can label their products as. It will probably require more states to pass similar bills though. But this whole fake meat stuff is so dumb, as I’ve reported routinely.

The nation of Italy has already passed a bill that not only bans the packaging but bans the production of it in their country.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

  • I live in Iowa and just went to the natural foods store yesterday. They have some lab-grown vegan “meat” in the freezer, but I wasn’t too worried. Thankfully, I live in a small town away from the large cities, so I’m not too worried for a black swan event to happen. Currently I am figuring out how to live in my car and sell useless electronics from my youthful days. Remember everyone to “love not the world neither the things that are in the world.” “The things which are seen are temporal” and “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
