The National Fraternal Order of Police, a national police group with nearly 400,000 members, released the report, which showed 378 officers were shot in the line of duty in 2023, up 14% from the previous year, when 330 were shot.
Of the 378 shot this year, 46 died from their injuries.
A graphic from the report shows the significant increase in recent years as well as the breakdown by state.
The report goes on to say that there were 115 “ambush-style” attacks on officers in 2023, leading to 20 fatally shot officers.
Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, blasted the “Defund the Police” movement, saying it led to a spike in shootings that has not decreased. That movement took off after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the ensuing Black Lives Matter riots around the country.
With the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and after so many Americans have seen the tragic consequences of the defund the police movement, it was our hope that these numbers would be a high-water mark. We were wrong.
Thankfully, because of dramatic improvements in medical trauma science and anti-ballistic technology, the lethality of these attacks has been reduced and only 46 of the officers shot in the line of duty were killed.

Yoes has advocated for Congress to pass the Protect and Serve Act, which creates federal criminal penalties for those who target police officers.
Truthfully, the violence against those sworn to protect and serve is beyond unacceptable; it’s a stain on our society, and it must end. It is incumbent upon our elected officials and community leaders to stand up, support our heroes, and speak out against the violence against law enforcement officers.

The situation with police in this country is a tumultuous one indeed. On one hand, it is so painfully obvious to see why there is a massive rise in crime across cities and states, simply because the police forces have been truncated; and many more have quit or fired for refusing to get the Covid vaccines, and simply want to get out of that career because they can barely do their jobs hardly, and are under very heavy scrutiny these days.
On the flipside, the corruption that resides within so many police forces all across the country is unfathomable, and many of these forces are just legalized and heavily armed mafias and gangs, that punish and harass innocents and protect the actual criminals. It’s a gigantic mess, needless to say.

It just really upsets and overwhelms me that these devils are in the police force. A lot of these cops are no longer ministers of righteousness, they’ve become ministers of evil and Satan. Don’t get me wrong, David. I support good moral and honest cops I’m all for them. It’s the crooked cops – these hitmen in disguise that need to be busted.
On that same note, cops are treated like crap and it’s wrong. Cops are treated like a bad case of fleas and that’s horrible.
I sometimes watch the clips on YouTube of the “Karen’s” that are narcissists that think the world revolves around them and the disrespect they have for the policemen, but the cops are very tolerant with them. They do better than I would cause some of them are belligerent to the cops all the way into their cells.
They ‘transformed’ the vocational training for policemen, & those coming out & into the forces today think like military in an occupied country….not like sheriffs and peacekeepers so much. They spout the ‘talking points’ they’re trained to no matter what you say to them: it’s truly sad, and frustrating. And, I know it must frustrate some of the old-timers who are sincere & try to do right, at least Constitutionally.

Activist judges don’t help morale or doing right, keeping criminals, thugs & gangsters off the streets either. And the support of supposedly conservative & ‘tough on crime’ types and appointed judges, the selection we’re permitted in ‘elections’ of judges, seems to be more posing & posturing than anything, while coming down hard on the least harmful & ‘non-violent offenders’. The kind of stuff Kamala Harris and her California mentor/boyfriend were into with the prisons.
