Scientists from London, England, have become the first turn to transform plastic trash into into food, vanilla ice cream selected as the first food to create from the plastic waste. While the ice cream is not yet officially permitted to be eaten and deemed ‘generally safe,’ the researchers hope this evolution in food is a conversation starter in how people view plastic pollution.
Artist and designer Eleanora Ortolani (27) and her cohorts created a new ice cream she calls “Guilty Flavors.”
Guilty Flavors is what I believe is the first sample of ice cream made from plastic waste. It’s coming from the same plastic as we can find in bottles, plastic bottles.
We have the tools today to rethink the food system we’re living in.
This is ready now and today but nobody can really touch it or interact with it because it’s not tested for safety yet.
Ortolani told Reuters at Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London.
Reuters explained that ‘the process, developed by scientists in Edinburgh, harnesses the metabolic power of bacteria and enzymes to behave as eco-friendly factories to digest polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and turn it into vanillin, the molecule that gives vanilla its flavor.’
‘Plastic is made of a string of molecules bonded together into what are known as polymers. Sadler broke those bonds with a hungry microbe, leaving her with molecules that were no longer plastic. That former PET-soup was then easily processed by another bacteria into vanillin,’ Reuters also noted.
Additionally, Dr. Joanna Sadler, a biotechnologist at the University of Edinburgh, told Reuters in a statement:
There are certain enzymes which do certain chemical reaction.
So if you plug those together, you can get through to lots of different chemical products.
I’ve even had members of the public email me saying it’s irresponsible to encourage people to eat plastic.
It is really important that we take the safety side of it really, really seriously and we make it very clear that this has to go through exactly the same regulatory processes and food standard processes as any other food ingredient. And only once it has been through all of those would it go anywhere near any kind of consumer product.
Sadler’s research was published in the journal The Biochemist in December 2021, focusing on ‘degrading and upcycling plastic and using it as feedstock for microbial growth.’

That “ice cream” looks ghastly! I’m not even sure what to call that, and I don’t think the scientists do either, so they just called it ice cream it’s the closest thing to whatever gack they just concocted. Absolutely will I not be eating that.

I was too busy to get to enjoy it, and there it sat for several days. The “whipped cream” on top, never melted! It was plastic! I’m glad I didn’t drink the sludge then, and haven’t since!
Since that time, I connected the dots between eating ice cream and going to the hospital with abdominal pains. I was told, “It’s because of the Shellac that they put in the ice cream to give it the sheen when you scoop it.” I stopped eating it, and haven’t had another pain! I’m not lactose intolerant; I can drink whole milk or the fake stuff bought in stores.
I spent two hours this morning looking at the BURIED links that prove we’ve also been eating aborted fetuses for MANY years! I’m willing to bet you didn’t know that. It’s hidden under the labels: “natural flavors” or “natural flavoring”. It’s in almost every food or drink we consume! In Canadastan, we’re not allowed to buy whole milk from farmers; we have to buy the store sludge instead. If caught, the buyer can be fined, and the farmer can lose his dairy quota…hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. That’s plenty of incentive to “play by their rules”!
A man who used to work at a local dairy told me two different times…”They put poison in the milk to make it last until the ‘Best Before’ date! There’s a skull and crossbones on the bag of powder! I won’t touch the stuff!”
