Plans for the country’s first-ever degree in influencing have been unveiled by South East Technological University (SETU).

The following report is by the Irish Independent:

A Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation and Social Media will be on offer at SETU Carlow from next September.

Lecturer in Media and Communications at SETU Carlow Dr Eleanor O’Leary told RTÉ’s News At One about the employment opportunities on offer.

Lots of people end up working and collaborating with brands, they could be self employed as an influencer, or they could go in and work with a company or organization as a content creator.

It draws on existing media, PR and marketing skills but it’s a new area in and of itself.

Dr O’Leary said the industry has doubled in value globally since 2019 and is worth an estimated “14bn to 16bn globally.”

She said SETU already offers degrees in the digital media space.

We saw this as adding on to what we already offered in that space and also we had done a number of summer schools in the area of digital skills called ‘The Digital Hustle.’

We saw that there was a growing interest in this area both from students and young people, and also from employers, so we went ahead in developing the degree at that point.

Dr O’Leary said influencing is an area that requires “a specific set of skills”.

Lots of young people are very proficient on social media…but in terms of offering education in this area, we were looking at adding things like business skills and knowledge, developing young people as champions of their own growth so they knew what they had to offer individually as creatives.

Also that they understood and had knowledge of critical cultural studies, technical skills like video editing, audio editing, being able to podcast and write content.

Then also the kind of skills they need in terms of their creativity. We have modules in creative writing, we have modules in content writing, creative video and storytelling. It’s three or four sets of skills really that people need to work in this area.

Dr O’Leary said professional skills in crisis management and using different platforms will help form the four-year syllabus for the degree.

On how content produced by influencers is consumed, Dr O’Leary said content creators are required by law to declare if they are advertising products.

That’s the kind of thing we’ll be teaching on the course, which is that young people are going into this industry understand that existing laws pertain to this area and when they work in that area they have that knowledge and won’t make any missteps.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

More and more people my generation and continuing to follow after have realized, awoken and smelled the coffee, realized what an insane waste of money a college degree is; with nearly most of them being outrageously costly, while not guaranteeing a decent job and wage (contrary to the lies repeated by every K-12 public school), and most people not even utilizing their degree.

This latest degree takes the cake for dumb and useless, though there are admittedly some really stupid degrees, credits, and scholarships I’ve heard of before. You don’t need to pay out the nose for a degree to be a social media influencer. There are endless FREE videos on YouTube on how to be one; and one of the first lessons all the big YouTubers, for example, will tell you is there is no perfect way to grow: it is largely by chance that you get picked up by the algorithm. And more so if you are a female with lowbrow standards and morals, then just strip naked on Instagram and start an Onlyfans. (I of course am not recommending any of this).

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1 Corinthians 1:20

This move by this Irish university, and more to come, represents another paradigm shift in society, where the concept of making junk and vain content with purpose, soul, or substance is here to stay. This is what the elites at the top ultimately want: people living in their little cubicles in their smart cities making useless TikTok dances and feeding exclusively off of the system.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

  • Thanks for reminding me of how big a joke the academia has become. It’s a sad joke, actually, because every society does need educated people with skills, but real skills, not worthless degrees.

On the one hand I’m outraged that young people are being taken advantage of in such a sordid way but on the other hand, on a certain level, I do think that if some people are this terribly dumb, they deserve everything they’re getting. It’s hard for me to sympathize with people, even if they are young and inexperienced, when they act like cartoon characters, are completely divorced from reality and have no respect for or understanding of what it means to earn a living.

Personally, I think it’s more lucrative to pursue a blue-collar profession. It’s also more compatible with a Christian lifestyle since it involves working in the real world with real people and it’s actually less nerve-racking. White-collar workers are a lot more stressed out and miserable and from what I’ve seen, the only wealthy white-collar people are the ones exploiting other people. Plumbers, chefs, auto technicians, even landscapers and janitors, seem to have better work ethics whereas professors, actors, company CEO’s and politicians do tend to be morally sleazier and more likely to exploit others. Still, the world needs good doctors and teachers and honest politicians. Christians need to regain control of the academia in order to bring back high standards and excellence in society, which can be done only if they unite and put their differences aside. I’d rather be arguing with Catholics about Papism than with hysterical feminists about whether or not they have the right to kill a human life before its birth. So let’s unite and agree to disagree.

    • Order Out of Chaos?! No thanks, I hate Order Out of Chaos. It’s a lie of Satan to put the truth aside to join together. It’s just bad judgment, definitely don’t join together with a “Harlot”.

      • Excuse me, but in the age of the Apostles, Christians had no qualms about working with pagans for the greater good. Didn’t Christ Himself tell Pontius Pilate, a pagan, that his power (the latter’s) was God-given? Didn’t Christ Himself, who had rebuked the Samaritans on countless occasions, still collaborate with them?

So why wouldn’t you join forces with other Christians, who are better than pagans and the Samaritans, and who profess that Christ is their Lord and their God? Sure, their theology is wrong but it won’t matter whose theology is correct if society turns into Sodom and Gomorrah.

By the way, are you a disinformation agent posing as a Christian fundamentalist in order to make real Christians look bad or to cause pointless, vitriolic conflicts among them? This would explain why you’re trying so hard to fit the stereotype of the fundamentalist fanatic. Half of your brief reply consists in rude buzzwords obviously chosen to elicit anger or to cause arguments.
