“AI will be a critical element to future warfighting and the speed at which we’re going to have to understand the operational picture and make decisions,” said a Brigadier General.

Marking an important breakthrough in the Air Force’s advancement of military technology, the United States Air Force announced that they have successfully completed its first unmanned flight that relied on AI.

On July 25th, “XQ-58A Valkyrie” took flight for three hours at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The jet was created in partnership with defense contractor Kratos, according to a company press release.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) provided more details in their press release published on August 2nd:

The flight builds upon four years of partnership that began with the Skyborg Vanguard and the Autonomous Aircraft Experimentation (AAx) programs.

The mission proved out a multi-layer safety framework on an AI/ML-flown uncrewed aircraft and demonstrated an AI/ML agent solving a tactically relevant “challenge problem” during airborne operations.

This sortie officially enables the ability to develop AI/ML agents that will execute modern air-to-air and air-to-surface skills that are immediately transferrable to other autonomy programs.

Col. Tucker Hamilton, chief, AI Test and Operations, for the Department of the Air Force, said

The algorithms were developed by AFRL’s Autonomous Air Combat Operations team. The algorithms matured during millions of hours in high fidelity simulation events, sorties on the X-62 VISTA, Hardware-in-the-Loop events with the XQ-58A, and ground test operations, as depicted in the video at the link below.

AACO has taken a multi-pronged approach to uncrewed flight testing of machine learning Artificial Intelligence and has met operational experimentation objectives by using a combination of High-performance computing, modeling and simulation, and hardware in the loop testing to train an AI agent to safely fly the XQ-58 uncrewed aircraft.

AACO Program Manager, Dr. Terry Wilson, said

DOD is committed to the responsible employment of AI. To achieve responsible use of AI requires teaming of developers and users of AI enabled autonomy working in collaboration with acquisition specialists.

AI will be a critical element to future warfighting and the speed at which we’re going to have to understand the operational picture and make decisions.

AI, Autonomous Operations, and Human-Machine Teaming continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace and we need the coordinated efforts of our government, academia, and industry partners to keep pace.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

Several weeks ago I reported on how the Israeli Army is using AI to operate their targeting systems and logistics departments, along with other countries working to do the same.

What Brig. Gen. Scott Cain said is indeed true, this is the future of warfare, and no doubt is going to lead to mass chaos and death; and God forbid if the AI starts getting too smart and starts killing people for the fun of it.

Again, it seems every time the highest “sciences” always lead to death and destruction.

[15] Their feet are swift to shed blood: [16] Destruction and misery are in their ways: [17] And the way of peace have they not known: [18] There is no fear of God before their eyes.

Romans 3:15-18

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

  • What could go wrong? I think I see more ‘collateral damage’ and ‘plausible deniability’ down the road! (Would lose my mind if I couldn’t see beyond it to 1 Thess 4&5, Revelation 6 onwards.)

  • Like having R2D2 flying missions….or more like C3PO when things get dicey. When the ‘programs’ get ‘hacked’ or when glitches occur (and they ALWAYS do, MANY times on PURPOSE) NO ACCOUNTABILITY…THAT is what they love.
Military Industrial Complex (MIC) playing with MORE of out tax money.
Just remember…ALL these ‘programs’ have BACK DOOR access.

  • I’m gathering rocks. The Democrats will have us living in caves soon. We are returning to the Stone Age. Regardless, at no point have I ever believed that Biden received 81 Million legitimate votes. And NOTHING Trump said convinced me of Biden’s fraudulent election. It was VERY APPARENT to ‘thinking’ people.

  • This is good news if tyrannical nations possessing AI drones ever need to put down domestic rebellions because they won’t have to worry about pilots refusing to kill patriots.

  • Why do you think they made the Terminator movies? Foreshadowing. Telling you what was coming. They ALWAYS do that knowing the masses will never figure it out even after its too late. Same thing with the MATRIX movies
