United Nations’ World Food Programme Demands Biometric Checks Be Implemented To Prevent Aid Theft

Until the new system and safeguards are put in place, all aid has been cut off for the time being, affecting around 20 million people who relied on the food supplies.

Biometric Update notes that ‘biometric systems were deployed several years ago in Yemen to make food distribution more efficient, where civil war caused or complicated famine. Ethiopia is much the same.

‘Of course, this is happening as privacy advocates in Africa and elsewhere are raising an alarm about deploying biometrics without adequate safeguards in place. Organizations have not always been able to balance transparency, performance and privacy,’ the outlet added.
