Both companies are funded by Bill Gates.

In what is being described as a “truly historic moment,” two cultivated (fake) meat companies received final regulatory approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) today, officially clearing away for lab-grown cell-cultured meat to be sold are restaurants and stores in the U.S.

The companies Upside Foods and GOOD Meat (A.k.a. Eat Just), both based in California, will now be able to sell their products to restaurants and eventually find their way into grocery store shelves.

The WinePress noted last year the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved lab-grown meats courtesy of Upside, and then formally approving Good Meat in April this year.

GOOD Meat announced in a press release that their faux chicken product has been approved for consumption and sale. GOOD Meat had received regulatory approval for their fake meats in 2020 and 2021 in Singapore to be sold in restaurants, a world first.

This announcement that we’re now able to produce and sell cultivated meat in the United States is a major moment for our company, the industry and the food system.

We have been the only company selling cultivated meat anywhere in the world since we launched in Singapore in 2020, and now it’s approved to sell to consumers in the world’s largest economy.

We appreciate the rigor and thoughtfulness that both the FDA and USDA have applied during this historic two-agency regulatory process.

Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of GOOD Meat and Eat Just, said

Bruce Friedrich, President of The Good Food Institute, said, “today’s groundbreaking announcement marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards building a safer, more efficient food system.”

American consumers are now closer than ever to eating the real meat they love, that uses far less land and water than conventionally produced meat.

As we navigate a future with increasing global demand for meat, it is crucial that governments worldwide prioritize cultivated meat as a solution that satisfies consumer preferences, supports climate goals, and ensures food security for generations to come.

He added

Dan Glickman, GOOD Meat Advisory Board member, and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and member of the U.S. House of Representatives, also weighed in on the regulation measures, saying:

Serving as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture afforded me the opportunity to work with countless individuals at the USDA who were committed to accelerating agricultural innovation and economic opportunity as well as promoting initiatives to better nourish Americans and feed people around the globe.

Today’s approval demonstrates that the United States is a global leader in the promising alternative protein space while also continuing to support family farmers’ efforts to feed the world through conventional food and agriculture techniques.

Uma Valeti, M.D., CEO and Founder of Upside Foods also weighed in, where he reminisced how he’s only been inside a slaughterhouse twice in his life, and never again, he says, this vowing to come up with something more humane.

At UPSIDE, we decided to reject the annual slaughter of billions of animals for food; to reject the degradation of our land and overuse of water; to reject the attitude that there isn’t a better way. Instead, we chose to pursue a more sustainable and more humane future for animals, people and the planet.

After years of cutting-edge work by our growing team of scientists, engineers, and, eventually, food developers, we designed and built the world’s most advanced Engineering, Production, and Innovation Center for cultivated meat. We call it EPIC, for the change it is about to bring.

He said in a statement

It should be noted the multibillionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has invested in both of these companies, and others like it including plant-based meats, according to a 2022 article by Green Queen.

Though the companies are approved to be sold in stores, getting consumers to buy and eat them is another story entirely; plus the fact that producing these cell-cultured meats are very costly and cannot compete at scale with conventional agricultural practices in the U.S.

The Associated Press admitted as much, writing:

But don’t look for this novel meat in U.S. grocery stores anytime soon. Cultivated chicken is much more expensive than meat from whole, farmed birds and cannot yet be produced on the scale of traditional meat, said Ricardo San Martin, director of the Alt:Meat Lab at University of California Berkeley.

Both firms emphasized that initial production will be limited. The Emeryville facility can produce up to 50,000 pounds of cultivated meat products a year, though the goal is to expand to 400,000 pounds per year, Upside officials said. Good Meat officials wouldn’t estimate a production goal.

By comparison, the U.S. produces about 50 billion pounds of chicken per year.

It could take a few years before consumers see the products in more restaurants and seven to 10 years before they hit the wider market, said Sebastian Bohn, who specializes in cell-based foods at CRB, a Missouri firm that designs and builds facilities for pharmaceutical, biotech and food companies.

Cost will be another sticking point. Neither Upside nor Good Meat officials would reveal the price of a single chicken cutlet, saying only that it’s been reduced by orders of magnitude since the firms began offering demonstrations. Eventually, the price is expected to mirror high-end organic chicken, which sells for up to $20 per pound.

San Martin said he’s concerned that cultivated meat may wind up being an alternative to traditional meat for rich people, but will do little for the environment if it remains a niche product.

If some high-end or affluent people want to eat this instead of a chicken, it’s good. Will that mean you will feed chicken to poor people? I honestly don’t see it.

He said

Tetrick said he shares critics’ concerns about the challenges of producing an affordable, novel meat product for the world. But he emphasized that traditional meat production is so damaging to the planet it requires an alternative — preferably one that doesn’t require giving up meat all together.

I miss meat. There should be a different way that people can enjoy chicken and beef and pork with their families.

Said Tetrick, who grew up in Alabama eating chicken wings and barbecue.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

Then just eat the meat, Tetrick! God made you and us to be meat-eaters to varying capacities, and abstaining from it is not healthy, especially when you expect us to eat crap for a lab and fermenting in some vat somewhere. But I guess that’s more “humane,” right? But these are the same sick individuals, who I assume, have no issue with sodomy or murdering babies in the womb, but how dare you slaughter a cow or a chicken?

[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; [3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 1 Timothy 4:1-6

What we see is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy, accurately preserved in the King James Bible alone; where we have these lies in hypocrisy about being more “humane” and eco-centric, and bending over backwards to make a fake meat and charge extortionate fees for it, whilst avoiding the real thing.

Definitely will not catch me eating this slop, that’s fore sure!

I do not see this selling well at all, as the plant-based meat failure in the U.S. should be a major indicator of such. But it was nice to see that a former USDA cog and now U.S. rep helped to get this dirt passed for approval.

  • I’m sure the true, high-end and affluent elitists are cunning enough to eat the real deal, grass fed organic meat. Not this fake garbage.

  • a fulfillment of Bible prophecy, accurately preserved in the King James Bible alone!!

    amen!!! thats exactly right!!

its a love hate feeling for me these past years. LOVE living to see Bible prophecies come to be but i hate all this evil thats coming to pass.

great article thanks for the heads up on this new conpany. we will definietly not be eating it.

  • How do you tell the real from the fake, as government are into deceiving the lie for truth?
This is a real concern, especially in Canada where Just as Liar, for Truth, duh! is the main deal.
When government speaks it becomes a question, can we really trust anything they state.
At one moment they RCMP is investigating Trudeau for criminal wrong doing (when the true media inquires about the RCMP investigation about a matter and cannot reveal everything), then a within hours the RCMP state there was never an investigation about Trudeau to the fake media.

So when it comes to your source of meat, is your government going to be about promoting the Gates funded meat as real meat, and anything else as fake.
They never prosecute individuals who are leaning left when speaking lies before Congress.
They never speak truth it seems anymore.

  • It’s getting to the point where it will all be lab grown someday. The fact that the FDA approved this crap is no surprise! Most of all our food ingredients approved by these monsters, are banned in over 30 countries! Let that sink in!
