A controversial transgender female cyclist won an event in North Carolina, trouncing the runner-up by 4 1/2 minutes.
Austin Killips, 27, took first place in the Belgian Waffle Race, a brutal 220-kilometre race after establishing an early lead, finishing the competition in eight hours, 28 minutes and seven seconds, according to Cycling News.
Killips, who was born male, was in front of female riders Paige Onweller and Flavia Oliveira, who eventually settled for second and third place, respectively.
Onweller kept it classy in a post-race message.
For those following women’s road cycling, you are aware of the UCI rule that this is currently allowed. Rather than sharing my personal opinions about the UCI rule, I think it’s most important to recognize that all athletes, no matter how they identify, should have a space to compete and race.
Additionally, underneath all helmets is a face and a person who deserves respect, dignity and a safe space to ride bikes.
She wrote in a blog post on her website.
While she called for trans athletes be treated with respect, she did suggest that they should have their own category to eliminate any unfair biological advantage.
In the future, I feel a separate category is appropriate, but event promoters are also learning what is best to preserve both female cycling while also creating an inclusive space for all to ride. These things take both time and grace to resolve.
She wrote.
However, the organizers of Belgian Waffle Race appear ready to enforce a change in the rules, at least as far as their own event is concerned.
“We are listening. We understand and appreciate all opinions and comments on this challenging situation,” they posted on their Instagram stories, adding that they hope to quickly have a plan in place for the remainder of the 2023 season.
With this in mind, we completely realize we have to create an official policy that addresses this important subject. We know we have to take this on ourselves with the hope others will follow suit.
Meanwhile, Killips posted a thank-you message after a BWR race in Vancouver last week,
I don’t take the warm and welcoming environment for granted and really appreciate that BWR was stoked to have me be a part of the inspirational roster of women mixing it up at the front.
I’ve long held that 200k is the perfect distance to ride a bike so I’m looking forward to more long days out like this.
