Open AI’s ChatGPT has now helped to design a new robot that can aid in harvesting and managing tomato crops.
Researchers at TU Delft and the Swiss Technical University EPFL teamed-up to utilize the capabilities of ChatGPT to help a construct a new robot, publishing their findings in the journal of Nature Machine Intelligence.
We wanted ChatGPT to design not just a robot, but one that is actually useful.
Assistant Professor Cosimo Della Santina, said
She and her partners chatted with ChatGPT and asked it what the greatest future challenges for mankind are, and after back-and-forth discourse they all decided on a robot that would be useful in agriculture and sustaining the food supply, which eventually caused them to land on a tomato-picking robot.
ChatGPT rattled off a list of design decisions and the team followed them all by step-by-step. PhD student Francesco Stella commented on the process, saying,
ChatGPT extends the designer’s knowledge to other areas of expertise. For example, the chat robot taught us which crop would be most economically valuable to automate.
ChatGPT also listed helpful and specific suggestions in the design process, which included things like, “Make the gripper out of silicone or rubber to avoid crushing tomatoes” and “a Dynamixel motor is the best way to drive the robot.” In the end this cultivated into a a robotic arm attached a small robot on wheels that can pick tomatoes.
However, we did find that our role as engineers shifted towards performing more technical tasks.
Stella added
Vertical Farm Daily wrote: ‘In the most extreme scenario, AI provides all the input to the robot design, and the human blindly follows it. In this case, the LLM acts as the researcher and engineer, while the human acts as the manager in charge of specifying the design objectives.’
In fact, Large Language Models (LLM) can be misleading if it is not verified or validated. AI bots are designed to generate the ‘most probable’ answer to a question, so there is a risk of misinformation and bias in the robotic field.
Santina explained
Stella concluded:
Ultimately, an open question for the future of our field is how LLMs can be used to assist robot developers without limiting the creativity and innovation needed for robotics to rise to the challenges of the 21st century.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY
The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
Proverbs 21:25
Slothfulness and convivence kills, and this is yet another example of robotics and AI taking away our jobs and just basic purpose of laboring. Knowledge has increased as the Bible prophesied, but the knowledge of the general population is lower than dinosaur bones in the earth. What’s the point of learning and mastering anything when the AI can do it for you? Ah yes, “you’ll own nothing and be happy,” they say.
[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).

Some of the most interesting challenges in engineering is the research and laying out of the problem. Admittedly, a lot of commercial projects can be very dry (and many contribute to the eventual antichrist).
Still haven’t touched these LLM chat bots, and God willing I won’t. In my lost life I was deluded enough to get excited about those things, even thinking about making an artificial companion (result of my rebellion and perversion).
Thank the Lord Jesus Christ for his mercy!
Psalm 99:8
8 Thou answeredst them, O Lord our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.
Ps 106:29,39
29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.
39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
Ecclesiastes 7:29
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
And on of the few positive instances of “inventions”
Proverbs 8:12
12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
