“People are outraged and furious. They can’t understand why it has to happen so quickly.”

On top of proposals to ban woodburning stoves and chimneys in the country, the German government is also banning oil and gas boilers and replace them with heat pumps, which has caused great discontent amongst the people.

The move is clearly to go full-blown electric for everything.

According to OilPrice.com, ‘Germany wants to become net-zero by 2045. To this end, the government recently announced it would ban boilers working with fossil fuels, effectively forcing people to switch to heat pumps as the only green enough option for people with no access to district heating.’

The ban’s cost is estimated to be over 9 billion euros ($10 billion) year-over-year until 2028. Costs are then supposed to drop by nearly 50% due to a increase of heat pump production and a scale-up of wind and solar capacity.

However, the ban does not take affect until next year, and a provision allows for residents to keep using the gas boilers. Therefore a reported spike in Germans buying gas boilers are occurring.

In order to retrofit homes and help Germans adapt to the new regulations, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s administration are offering up to 30% of the cost of the transition.

But Germans are not happy.

People are outraged and furious. They can’t understand why it has to happen so quickly.

Petra Uertz of the Residential Property Association told the Financial Times.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a senior MP from the liberal Free Democratic Party, added that “this law affects 66mn Germans […] and there is enormous disquiet.”

We shouldn’t be tying it to a particular date come hell or high water, there are things in it that must be changed first.

OilPrice.com also notes: ‘The Green Party, by the way, is losing popular support faster than snow melts in May. According to the latest figures, as presented by the FT, it is now less popular than the right-wing Alternative for Germany, with a popularity rating of 14%.’

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

Unsurprisingly if the government is seeking to ban woodburning and fireplaces they would also move to ban oil and gas for the people; but I figured I’d mention this to.

Fortunately there appears to be a loophole, for now, that makes the restrictions look silly. In order to make and power all this electricity, OIL is still at the center of it. Oil will never go away, period; but from the people’s direct grasp, that’s a different story.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
