Last week it was announced that four counties in the state of West Virginia will now rollout facial recognition cameras and software at public schools, in a bid to better monitor and increase “safety” of the children.

WV Public Broadcasting reported that this is apart of Governor Jim Justice’s School Safety Initiative, affecting Marion, Taylor, Doddridge and Putnam Counties. The schools will install facial recognition software from Rank One Computing.

Jonah Adkins, director of preK-12 academic support for the Department of Education, said that ‘that the software is backward compatible with existing cameras and allows counties to create their own databases of individuals.’ He further clarified that all facial data is stored locally on school servers.

It provides schools with an additional layer of security. They can enter the faces of their staff and students and well-known visitors. It sends administrators alerts if an unwanted person were to approach the door or anywhere on campus.

Adkins said

West Virginia’s move is a part of a much broader ambition to install more facial recognition in schools throughout the Untied States and other countries.

Biometric Update adds:

Another leading facial recognition developer serving the American school market, Oosto, recently joined the ZeroNow alliance, which seeks to put an end to school shootings.

More and more schools are turning to facial recognition to better protect their students and staff by identifying persons of interest in real-time – enabling schools to quickly respond to potential threats and prevent incidents before they occur.

Being part of the ZeroNow alliance will allow us to collaborate with peers in industry and education who are similarly dedicated to protecting schools.

Says Oosto Chief Marketing Officer Dean Nicolls.

In March, another advocacy group, the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) updated its guide on using biometrics in K-12 schools, proposing that biometrics be governed by a district-level policy and that parents be offered opt-out procedures. The guide also recommends that facial recognition be used only to identify individuals entering school property.

On the other side of the Atlantic, however, facial recognition deployment in schools may be facing a more powerful impediment: The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In February, the UK data protection authority said that the use of facial recognition for lunch payments in nine schools of North Ayrshire country is likely against UK GDPR data protection laws.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

For thus hath the LORD of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.

Jeremiah 6:6

Again, another added reason to get your kids out of public schools. As corruption goes then so to does the attempts to mitigate it, thus leading to more losses of liberty and freedom.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
