Last week the popular salad and fast food chain Sweetgreen unveiled their first autonomous kitchen at their Naperville, Illinois, location. The robotic kitchen that requires no staff to operate it is called the Sweetgreen Infinite Kitchen.”

The company said in a press release this move is designed “to enhance the customer experience and food quality, with a focus on fresh ingredients, fast service, and friendly hospitality.”

Sweetgreen explain how their automated kitchen works in a press release:

As a brand that promises fast, fresh and friendly service, the new format allows for quicker pace, precise portioning and increased accuracy—while creating efficiencies that allow the team to focus on fresh prep and intimate hospitality.

Guests can watch the technology at work, from dispensing greens and dressing bowls and plates, to evenly dispersing ingredients and mixing salads. Team members add the final touches at the finishing station, with a sprinkle of herbs or a scoop of avocado.

When visiting the Naperville sweetgreen restaurant, customers are greeted by the new “host” position which provides a more personalized connection between team members and guests. To order, customers can utilize self-service kiosks, place an order through the mobile app, or order directly from the restaurant’s host.

The new restaurant format also brings in a new Tasting Counter, brand-storytelling digital screens and a revamped merchandising strategy for an authentic sweetgreen experience at every touchpoint. Customers visiting the store will be able to shop exclusive merch with designs inspired by the new store joining the Naperville community.

We believe that automation will enable us to elevate the quality and integrity of our food while also providing a faster and more convenient experience for our customers and a better, more dynamic job for our team members.

With the integration of the sweetgreen Infinite Kitchen in our restaurants, we can unlock efficiencies that will enable us to grow more quickly as we scale.

Jonathan Neman, CEO and Co-Founder of sweetgreen, said

Restaurant Drive added: ‘Profitability has long been an issue for Sweetgreen, which lost $33.7 million in the quarter, though that figure is an improvement on its $49.7 million loss in Q1 2022. Labor-saving tech that improves four-wall EBITDA could help the company control its costs. To bolster sales and aid customer retention, Sweetgreen deployed a tiered loyalty program in late April.’

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

I had made a small allusion to this last year in a report titled “Restaurant Jobs Are Coming To An End As More Restaurant Chains Are Investing In Robots To Replace Real Workers.”

But since sales are down the company is looking to trim fat, and that fat are employees and instead replaced with robots.

[25] The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

Proverbs 21:25

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
