“The driver has now got 360-degree vision, and the system can respond faster than a human can in terms of reaction time.”

Scotland will soon begin providing driverless bus services in what is being heralded as a “world first,” though a driver will remain behind the wheel just in case an emergency arises or something malfunctions, per UK law as fully autonomous vehicles are not technically legal as of yet.

The service is set to carry 10,000 passengers a week over a 14-mile route on five buses, the operator told AFP in a statement. The buses will travel 50 miles per hour.

The autonomous technology on this bus has been tested before but this is the first time that it has been put on to a bus that’s now a registered local bus service.

The system is designed to increase safety.

The driver has now got 360-degree vision, and the system can respond faster than a human can in terms of reaction time.

There’s always going to be a safety driver in the seat even when the bus is driving itself. So that if there is a need for them to take control, they can take control.

As the service starts, we’ll be collecting more data and then we’ll be increasing the amount of autonomous travel.

Peter Stevens, policy director of Stagecoach bus service, told AFP after a demonstration near Edinburgh.

AFP added: ‘Drivers do not touch the controls while the vehicle is in autonomous mode, and a conductor onboard handles ticketing and passenger enquiries. The onboard system will detect other road users to prevent collisions, while optical cameras and radar will scan the road to check for pedestrians.’

‘The control system includes an artificial intelligence engine that receives information from throughout the bus to determine its exact location and calculate the safest route to its destination,’ the outlet added.

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

Proverbs 21:25

What could go wrong?

This is the type of stuff that is just absolutely silly. So you got these guys on standby with their hands hovering the steering wheel, but instead of driving the bus themselves at that point, they must instead attentively be ready to do their job if – shocker – something goes wrong. Reminds of self-checkouts that always glitch-out, with some bum employee paid to stand in one spot watch you struggle and then eventually come and actually do the job faster than the machine.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

Proverbs 22:13

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
