CDC Director Rochelle Walensky recently said that “mis- and disinformation” is to blame for there being very low vaccination rates in kindergartners in schools, she asserted during a House Energy and Commerce oversight and health subcommittees hearing.
During the congressional hearing she said:
I do want to highlight the real importance of mis and disinformation and how it has undermined our vaccine efforts.
We’ve seen vaccine rates of incoming children into kindergarten have gone down from 94% to 93% just in this last year. That’s a quarter-of-a-million children not coming to kindergarten being up to date in their vaccines.
We are doing a lot of work at CDC, but this is not something that CDC can do alone. It’s going to take all of our agencies, it’s going to take all of the government and every single one of us has a role in mis- and disinformation.
Bill Gates has openly said that in the “next pandemic” and that “some of the insanity” on the internet needs to be moderated.
Later during the conference Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw asked Walensky as to why the updated bivalent mRNA Covid boosters have been approved for young children, especially considering this age group is listed as very low-risk for contracting Covid and having symptoms.
Walensky said that there have been “2,000 pediatric deaths from Covid-19,” and that there the only way they could get approval for them was to place them in the pediatric vaccination schedule.
Furthermore, she was later asked by Alabama Representative Gary Palmer as to why the government did not perform a clinical trial to see if face masks were effective in stopping the spread of Covid, and were subsequently mandated. She said that there were already studies validating “masks were working to prevent transmission,” insinuating that was already an obvious and known fact.
I’m not sure anybody would have proposed a clinical trial because, in fact, there wasn’t equipoise to the question anymore.
She said
She went on to say that the CDC will continue to recommend mask-wearing for schools if a community sees a reported high concentration of Covid cases, and that there are plans to alter their guidance for masking as a whole for the rest of the nation.
Our masking guidance doesn’t really change with time. What it changes with is disease. So when there’s a lot of disease in the community, we recommend that those communities and those schools mask.
When there’s less disease in the community, we recommend that those masks can come off.
Lastly of note, Kentucky Representative Brett Guthrie asked Walensky is the CDC ready and prepared for “another pandemic,” after learning from the missteps and being unprepared in 2020.
Walensky did not give a straight yes or no answer. Rather, they are continuing to strengthen their pandemic readiness and “response-based agency,” but requests more support and strengthening from Congress to achieve even better readiness.
