Media Now Warns Of ‘Rapidly Spreading’ XBB.1.5 Omicron Variant. WHO Says Its The Most Transmissible Version Yet. *UPDATE*

Just in time for the new year, health officials are now once again sounding the alarm on yet another infectious Covid variant that is here to plague us all. This one is now being dubbed as “XBB1.5.”

The Independent says ‘XBB is a subvariant of the Omicron BA.2 variant, and XBB.1.5 is a subvariant of XBB.’

They also added that ‘Japanese researchers studied XBB’s characteristics in hamsters including transmissibility and immune resistance.’

Over 40% of COVID-19 cases in the United States are now caused by the highly contagious Omicron XBB.1.5, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed on Friday, with the subvariant doubling from the previous week.

Although many public health experts are expressing concern about the rising COVID cases in China, infectious disease experts have been increasingly worried about the XBB.1.5 variant.

Ironically, probably the worst variant that the world is facing right now is actually XBB.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, in a recent interview with Reuters, said

Osterholm added that seven of the 10 U.S. states where cases and hospitalizations are rising are in the Northeast, concurrent with an increase of XBB cases there, he said.

Recombinants of the BA.2 variant, XBB and XBB.1.5, together accounted for 44.1% of the total cases in the country for the week ended Dec. 31. For the week ended Dec.24, XBB.1.5 had made up 21.7% of the total cases.

UPDATE 1/5:

Since then the World Health Organization is now sounding the alarm about this purported variant, stating that they are closely monitoring its movement, and that this subvariant is the most transmissible version of Covid-19 yet.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead for Covid-19, told press reporters on Wednesday:

It is the most transmissible subvariant that has been detected yet. The reason for this are the mutations that are within this subvariant of omicron allowing this virus to adhere to the cell and replicate easily.

The more this virus circulates the more opportunities it will have to change. We do expect further waves of infection around the world but that doesn’t have to translate into further waves of death because our countermeasures continue to work.

She said, adding that 27 countries reportedly have this variant in circulation already

In a statement by the WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus yesterday, he noted that the WHO is “really concerned about the current COVID-19 epidemiological picture, with both intense transmission in several parts of the world and a recombinant sub-variant spreading quickly,” paying special attention to events unfolding in China since the government has removed all their restrictions, which has led many health officials to squirm and nervously wonder if new variants will then make its way to other countries.

Tedros added that XBB.1.5 – which they claim was detected in October of last year – is “following closely and assessing the risk of this subvariant and will report accordingly.”

He followed-up by stating,

COVID-19 will no doubt still be a major topic of discussion, but I believe and hope that with the right efforts this will be the year the public health emergency officially ends.

This morning Tedros made another statement where he again reiterated that “the threat of COVID-19 persists,” and that “major inequalities in access to testing, treatment and vaccination continue.”

The current COVID-19 epidemiological picture is troubling. There is intense transmission and pressure on health systems particularly in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, and a recombinant sub-variant spreading quickly. 

XBB.1.5 is the recombinant of two BA.2 sub-lineages.

WHO is following closely, assessing, and will report on the risk to Member States accordingly.
