As the tech wizards and giants continue to build and replicate the real world into the artificial one, restaurants and food products are now another noteworthy addition to the metaverse.
As a preview of what to expect in the years to come, The Spoon reported in November of 2019 that Chipotle held a promotional event featuring a low-poly version of their restaurants in the giant sandbox world of Roblox, giving away $1 million worth of free burritos redeemable in real life.
The Spoon lays out seven different aspects the way the metaverse will completely transform restaurants.
- Marketplaces – apps won’t be the primary ordering channel anymore once more people begin to participate in the metaverse. Companies like Doordash, UberEats and GrubHub will need to rethink their strategy as ordering and discovery will be embedded in more interoperable experiences. Doordash moving to become a pure logistics API is smart because they will be protected if they lose the ordering portal in the metaverse — someone still has to deliver the food after all.
- Marketing – brands will start integrating food into virtual experiences. Instead of traditional email marketing, restaurants will be able to recreate their physical space in the metaverse and invite guests from around the world. The metaverse will create new opportunities to test promotions and loyalty programs, just like Chipotle showed by launching their Boorito promo as digital-only this year.
- Reservations – the interface for booking a table will completely change. Diners will do a quick virtual tour before booking the specific table they want. Pricing will be dynamic for the very best tables.
- Delivery – ghost kitchens will be the building blocks of group ordering in the metaverse. You’ll be able to share a meal with your friends delivered to you at the same time even if you are halfway across the globe.
- QR codes – QR codes will be more than just menus. They will be the access point for augmented reality. Friends from the metaverse who can’t make the night out will be able to join in on the fun and send your party a bottle of champagne to celebrate.
- Payments – while we expect restaurants to always take dollars, we think the metaverse will have a few different major cryptocurrencies that rise to the top over the next 5 years. The currency that a restaurant accepts will be part of its identity and marketing efforts.
- Membership – members-only hospitality experiences like SOHO house will extend their house into the digital realm. Members will have access to exclusive digital worlds if they own the right (non-fungible token) NFT to get in the front door. These NFTs will be traded on open marketplaces as keys to different clubs.
Additionally, The Spoon concluded their report by writing, ‘Most of us love sitting down with friends at a restaurant with a chill vibe and having a great conversation in the real world. The metaverse will not change that. Restaurants will continue to provide those unique experiences. But within the metaverse, restaurants will be able to reach more guests that might not always be able to show up in person.’
And now, more food companies are getting involved in this metaverse. The popular meat stick snack company Slim Jim announced that they will be throwing their hat in the ring, by creating a virtual market place comprised of NFTs, and virtual goods and food products.
The company recently filed patents under the terms “Slim Jim,” “metaverse,” and “Long Boi Gang.” The paperwork additionally notes their new augmented reality marketplace will provide “a metaverse for people to browse, accumulate, buy and sell virtual food products,” insinuating that Slim Jim is seeking to take a leading role in these environments.
And just today, the food brand Blue Diamond – whole sells things like almonds and almond milk – said they will also be getting in on the action by releasing limited-edition banana almond milk-themed NFTs.
‘With each resale of the banana almond milk-inspired NFTs, Almond Breeze will donate 5% of the earnings to Future Farmers of America as part of their initiative to support rising farmers and agriculture,’ Hypebeast wrote.
But it’s not just food companies and restaurants rushing to nestle into the metaverse, but international grocery chains like Walmart are as well.
On January 20th, The Motley Fool reported that Walmart had filed a ton of metaverse-related patents, noting that this was a major of what was to come this year. These patents described Walmart-branded cryptocurrencies and NFTs for “virtual merchandise.”
Around the same time, Walmart released an early demonstration of what they envision for the future of shopping in a Walmart in the metaverse. The short video depicts the user guided by an artificially intelligent employee guiding the shopper throughout the warping store, where the customer could be seen grabbing digital food items that loaded up a variety information for the user to read.
At one point in the demonstration, the AI employee told the user,
I am getting a notification from your connected smart grid: it looks like you already have a full gallon of milk at home. Should we put this one back?

[9] And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. [10] And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. [11] And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.Revelation 11:9-11
I have cited that passage numerous when discussing the metaverse, as I believe that these verses are describing that, especially when you consider these cryptos and NFTs.
This report gives yet another insight as to how this antichrist metaverse will work, but it extends farther than that:
[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; [3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.1 Timothy 4:1-3
In order for this metaverse system to work, the masses must be plugged into the grid physically, in order for it work properly. Everything must be interconnected, including the people.

[7] Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? [8] Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:7-10).
