The famous chef Gordon Ramsey – made famous for shows like ‘Hell’s Kitchen,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” “Master Chef,” “The F Word,” along with his YouTube channel that currently has over 18.8 million subscribers – recently stated in an interview that the Covid lockdowns allowed for all the “crap restaurants” to be wiped off the table.
Reported by The Guardian, Ramsay told the former ‘shadow chancellor’ Ed Balls in Radio Times, his feelings while promoting his latest show “Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars” premiering on the BBC networks.
Balls asked if the hospitality sector is recovering from the last two years of Covid restrictions. Ramsay stated:
The business was on its arse, but it’s getting better … It’s been devastating the last two years. Landlords don’t say, ‘Take a holiday for two years’. But I think what has been evident for all of us is the crap’s gone.
Balls wanted clarification on what Ramsay meant, and he explained further:
Well, just s***holes in a prime position and taking advantage because they’re in a great location, and they’ve got the footfall. But now we’ve wiped the slate clean, which is good.
Customers have got so much smarter in the last two years. They know a lot more about food than they ever have done and have been making their own sourdough, so it’s taught everyone [in the restaurant industry] to raise their game … It’s wiped the arrogance from the industry.
It is no secret that the Covid lockdowns have been detrimental to the state, national, global economies, with the hospitality industry getting utterly roasted the most, leading to many foreclosures and defaults.
For example, one such ‘crap restaurant’ in Ypsilanti, Michigan, called Haab’s Restaurant, recently was forced to close it’s doors after 87 years in the business – opening in 1934, enduring the hardships of the Great Depression, years of many wars, and the Great Recession, but with the Covid pandemonium being the final straw that broke the camel’s back.
This is only but one example. Eat This Not That reported in November of 2020 of some of the most popular restaurants state-by-state that were forced to close, some of which have been around for decades.
Whereas ‘[non-] crap restaurants’ like McDonalds, that have had “to raise their game,” saw exponential growth since the lockdowns, as they were allowed to stay open, as did many other similar chains.

I totally agree with ya, Hannah! I HATE television! It’s as exciting as watching paint dry, even paint drying is more entertaining than the idiot box! We were better off in the dark ages when all we had for entertainment was playing with rocks and making shadow puppets.
My grandma who was lukewarm and a church building cult buildings lover-a pentecostal thinking that all that glittered was gold was ultimately no different than a Catholic, all grandma ever did during her remaining days was watch TV for about eight hours a day watching baby shows, game shows, courtroom shows, that abomination known as PAX TV (which went south and got kicked off the air because of very poor ratings thank God-now it’s been replaced with Ion Television which is owned by NBC) sitting in front of that idiot box watching a bunch of goofy, dumb shows turning grandma’s brain into mashed potatoes! As a result of grandma being a religious TV head, grandma got Alzheimer’s!
