At a recent meeting at this year’s South by Southwest Festival in Texas, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that his virtual reality goggles and other addons will work in tandem with smartphones, ultimately phasing them out to a lesser degree.
According to a report by The Sun, Zuckerberg explained that the size and aesthetics of the company’s virtual reality glasses are the two biggest factors for development.
In order for VR to take off it’s going to have to look good.
It’s one of the most interesting challenges of the next decade. Miniaturizing things is much harder.
While testing and production continues on these new glasses, Meta will continue to release updated versions of their current Quest headset, that is supposed to have facial and eye tracking, higher-resolution graphics, and reshaped lens to make the goggle more compact.
You’ll get some experiences, some things like what we did with Ray-Ban where we cram as much tech as possible into a normal-looking pair of glasses.
The Ray-Ban smart glasses can take pictures, adjust audio playlists and feeds, and receive calls along with voice assistance.
The essence of virtual and augmented reality is that you need to have a technology that delivers this feeling of presence, the sense that you’re actually right there with another person and all the different sensations that come with that normally.
The Sun report does note, however, Zuckerberg says he still thinks people will still be carrying their smart devices with them in the future, but believes that everyone will be walking with smart glasses/goggles on.
[They will] help us out throughout the day and give us the ability to share our experiences with those we love in completely immersive and new ways that aren’t possible today.

The WinePress has touched on some of this in other reports about the metaverse, especially early on, that this will be part of the soon “new normal.” However, smart phones and even all this headset garbage is not then end game either: it is biometrics and being plugged into the grid, which is ultimately what the mark of the beast really is.
