Eat A Swede!? Swedish Organization Wants To Cultivate Lab-Grown Human Flesh To Save The Planet

Swedish entrepreneur and scientist Erik Karlsson believes that the best protein source for us to eat is ourselves. But not just anyone, but famous Swedish celebrity Alexander Skarsgard – to use cultivate lab-grown meat cells from him for food.

Karlsson’s new short film is called, “Eat A Swede.” You watch it on their official website. The film was produced by The Swedish Food Federation.

As described by a Scandinavian news outlet, the climax of the film depicts Karlsson telling the movie star that he is “prime meat,” offering $100 million for some of his “fresh cells.” After some deliberation, Skarsgard said he’ll get back to Karlsson for more information, leaving open the doorway that he may give up his cells to be reproduced in a lab for conception.

The film was produced to invoke and answer the question: ‘how do we produce food for an additional 2000 million people without wrecking the planet?’

‘And while we’re not ready to eat ‘human’ lab-grown meat just yet, the Federation, which represents 800 food and drink companies in Sweden, say there are other, more conventional ways that we can make enough high-quality food for everyone in a sustainable fashion,’ wrote the Swedish news outlet.

Our companies are at the forefront of sustainable production, and many of our practices can be copied by producers around the world. But we also want to be inspired by other countries and industries and get new ideas on how we can become even more sustainable at home. With ‘Eat a Swede’, we want to raise this issue with politicians, business and the public so that we can make the transition to sustainable production a reality before it’s too late.

There is no magic bullet, quick fix solution that will make global food production sustainable overnight. For the Swedish food industry, it’s taken years and years of countless, incremental changes that in the end have resulted in large improvements. But now we don’t have that kind of time anymore. We hope that by sharing our methods and techniques that we can help other countries speed up their transition to sustainable production. In short, don’t eat a Swede, just produce like one.

Cannibalism Redefined

Due to climate emergency fears, and a population that is forecast to surpass the 10 trillion mark by 2050, Karlsson, like many other scientists today, want to find new ways to have more sustainable food products. Even though there are already many plant-based alternatives, he notes, meat is what the consumer still wants and prefers.

How can we generate meat in a different way?

What technology has done today is that technology has been advancing so that now we can actually grow meat in the lab. Now we can actually take cells from an animal, put them in the lab, and make sure that those cells divide and actually grow out into meat.

But I want to take it a step further:

Proteins exist in all different organisms, and proteins are built of different amino acids, and of course different proteins have different amino acids. But I mean, for a human to make sure we get the right amino acids, and right proteins, ideally we should eat human proteins. So what I want to do, is that I want to grow human meat, and sell that.

Short moment later, the film gives us a glimpse into Karlsson’s lab where “the magic happens.” One of his volunteer students, Sarah, gave him the permission to extract cells from her butt, to then be cultured, stored, and then eventually eaten.

Karlsson was asked what human meat tastes like, to which he responded with “crocodile.” When asked what a crocodile tastes like, he laughingly said “like chicken.”

We don’t say that we eat pig meat for example. We say that we have pork. And I think we should do the same with human meat.

Of course this is branding. But I think we should call it Swede Meat instead.

I believe that you are what you eat, and if you take Swedes for example, the Swedish people in general are quite righteous people. We love being out in nature, we care about the environment, we try to stay fit, eat healthy food. The type of food we are growing is made in a sustainable way. We don’t use a lot of chemicals, we don’t use a lot of antibiotics to our animals. We want to make sure the animals are treated right.

The things that we are eating can actually go on to the cell stem. I believe that we can use that to say: “Why not eat a Swede?” You get this entire package by eating Swede Meat.

A Swedish professor was interviewed as well, and according to him, a survey conducted a group of people (that he never specified the people questioned or the polling group), found the 8% were open to potentially eating human meat.

Are They Joking?

Though the Swedish Food Federation (SFF) went to great lengths to produce this short film over several years, the producers claim that on their website the film is fake, a satire; or, as they call it, a “mockumentary.”

Erik Karlsson is played by a Swedish actor. The American investors are actors too. The focus groups are not actors, but were informed afterwards about the purpose of the film.

Magnus Söderlund is a real-life professor at a Swedish business school. The things he talks about in the film actually happened.

They also explain that the people in the film who were led to believe they ate meat from mankind, were actually fed a Swedish tenderloin.

Furthermore, they state that eating human meat is bad idea, but not the concept of lab-grown meats in general, along GMO’s and gene editing per CRISPR technology.

It’s as absurd as it is unnecessary. The film and its premise are our way of getting your attention to talk about something very urgent: how do we produce high quality food for 10 billion people without wrecking the planet? While we don’t think lab grown human meat is a good idea, we welcome all kinds of innovations and new technologies that can bring us closer to the goal of sustainable food production. Lab grown meat is a good example, as are GMO and CRISPR gene editing.

Rather, the organization is advocating for five overarching goals:

• We undertake to ensure that by 2030 we will have switched to fossil-free energy in both our production processes and our transport.
• We undertake to reduce food waste in our own production by half by 2030, and to contribute to reducing food waste in other links in the food supply chain.
• We undertake to achieve 100% material recyclability for all types of packaging by 2030, and to work to increase the proportion of recycled material used in our packaging solutions.
• We undertake to implement a code of conduct and a work environment policy for suppliers in our entire supply chain, and to follow up on this policy every year.
• We undertake to improve the efficiency of our water consumption. To achieve this, we will carry out mapping processes and draw up efficiency goals.

Furthermore, the organization’s website lists 12 different major Swedish companies that have already made pledges to lower their carbon emissions by 2030 or sooner, using less plastics, even more recycling, more renewable products, and other companies that offer faux mince meat made out of plants.

The SFF also places emphasis on greatly reducing food waste, the necessity of eating all the leftovers and not throwing it out, utilizing freezers for more preservation, and buying what you need only.

Plan your meals. Think about when you will eat what you’re buying. Make a shopping list, stick to it and avoid impulse buys. You will waste less food and save money.

Though it is not mentioned here, some companies have already developed smart packaging that will allow the package to interact with the other smart devices in the home, that is able to determine when food is going bad and other data. Even in the state of Maine, U.S.A, a law passed earlier this summer that will fine corporations for not using more “sustainable” packaging.

But as emphasized earlier, the production crew says the “Eat A Swede” film is just a radical way of grabbing people’s attention, and is nothing more than a joke.

But are they really joking, and are not in favor of rebranded cannibalism? This question is a valid one, as the concept of cannibalism as a practice for sustainability and health, is by no means a conspiracy. As a matter of fact, similar ideas have already been floated out over the years, and even in practice without people realizing it.

For example, in 2014 a company called BiteLabs introduced the idea of eating “celebrity meat,” where the company would take the cells of a celebrity and culture them – identical to the Eat A Swede film – and then grind it up with other meats into a salami.

At the moment, our primary goal is to provoke discussion and debate around topics of bioethics and celebrity culture. We see inefficiencies, environmental hazards, and ethical problems in the world’s food production and distribution. There are exciting opportunities to disrupt these industries while opening new ways to consume celebrity culture.

Fast forward a handful of years and the American media was again floating out the idea of cannibalism as being a sustainable practice – a taboo that needed to be undone.

Newsweek cited work from two psychologists from the University of Manchester, saying that cannibalism is not that bad as people think that it is, as some cultures have done this for a very long time.

Later that year, in 2017, Wired posed the question, “What’s wrong with eating people? You could soon be dining on lab-grown celebrity canapés and lightly-seasoned chunks of your loved ones. But is the world ready for synthesized cannibalism?”

What if you could tuck into a juicy human burger that was guaranteed cruelty-free? No-one has to lose a shoulder for your Sunday roast; no-one gets their leg sawn off for your signature slow-cooked tagine. No-one even has to die these days. In the not-too-distant future, we could all be tucking into lab-grown meaty cubes of our favourite celebrities. Or eating a synthesised slab of newlyweds to mark the special day.

Wired wrote

Backtracking a bit, beginning in 2005, a website was launched that promoted what was called “Hufu” (Human + Tofu): a product that contained zero cells and flesh from mankind, but was tofu reshaped and textured to resemble “human flesh in taste and texture.”

Hufu’s CEO Mark Nuckols said he got the concept after eating a tofu turkey sandwich and reading the book “Good To Eat: Riddles of Food and Culture,” by Marvin Harris, which was about cannibalism. Nuckols is also a JD graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, one of the largest Jesuit universities in America and around the world.

I think that a lot of the pleasure of eating the Hufu product, is imagining you’re eating human flesh. For that moment, you can join the fraternity of cannibals… If you really want to come as close as possible to the experience of cannibalism, Hufu is your best option.

Ultimately the idea flopped and lost traction by 2006.

But jumping back to more modern and current times, in the spring of this year, The WinePress cited a report once again from Newsweek that alerted readers to the concept of using young people’s blood as an anti-aging treatment, to make older people look radically younger again.

The report didn’t necessarily point to the idea of eating and drinking blood, but it did, however, make the concept of using people’s blood an acceptable idea.

Nowadays, it seems that use of blood is becoming more and more trendy, in an attempt to make it less taboo. Such as the case when rapper Lil Nas X made a major splash when he released a limited amount of shoes that contained someone’s actual blood in them, in tandem with a music video that depicted the rapper giving “Satan” a lap dance in his depiction of hell. Moreover, months later famous skateboarder Tony Hawk took it a step further and had his own blood extracted, and mixed into paint for a limited number of skateboard decks. Though, this publicity generated nowhere near the amount of attention and outrage as Lil Nas X did.

These are just some of the examples of how having someone’s blood is now becoming “cool” and trendy, and will no doubt continue to grow.

But getting back to more of open cannibalism, in the United States, it already is happening.

In late-May of this year, The WP reported that the state of Wisconsin became the 20th state to legally allow for people’s cremated remains to be used as a regenerative fertilizer and sewer sludge for soil for farms.

Disposing of the remains in any other lawful manner that does not harm the environment, but only if the remains are reduced to a particle size of one-eighth inch or less.

The Wisconsin government wrote

Moreover, as noted in that report, parts of Australia also allow for identical practices. But the point is, people’s remains are in fact being used to grow and add “nutrients” to crops in the field. Therefore, many conventional products seen on the shelves, baskets, refrigerators at grocery stores, have the potential to use these practices when growing their produce. Furthermore, as explained in that report, products with the Non-GMO Verified sticker can still use these “regenerative” practices; whereas, the USDA Organic verification label prohibits any use of sewage or “biosludge” in cultivation and production, thereby eliminating the use of cremated remains and repackaged cannibalism.

So, as noted earlier, the “Eat A Swede” film maybe touted as fake and an attention grabber, the concept is certainly nothing new, and will continue to be floated out and test marketed for years to come.

Of course it’s just a joke, a “mockumentary,” they say. Surrre it is… I don’t know about you, but I smell a ruse. The movie may have been scripted and acted out, but the concept is VERY real, as demonstrated in this report.

Once again, this unfathomable concept of eating lab-grown slop WILL be reality, along with all the faux meats that The WinePress has been hammering on for some time.
