G20 Nations Meet In Rome To Initiate Pandemic Task Force To Vaccinate 70% Of The World By Mid-2022

Leading up to the highly anticipated COP26 climate change conference at Glasgow, Scotland, health and finance authorities from 20 of the world’s top and influential economies (G20) met in Rome to ensure that 70% of the world’s population has received a Covid vaccine by the summer of 2022.

Though financial facility proposals presented by the United States and Indonesia were not accepted, the newly created task force said they would work to redirect funds to increase pandemic readiness, response, and prevention.

To help advance toward the global goals of vaccinating at least 40% of the population in all countries by the end of 2021 and 70% by mid-2022 … we will take steps to help boost the supply of vaccines and essential medical products and inputs in developing countries and remove relevant supply and financing constraints.

We establish a G20 Joint Finance-Health Task Force aimed at enhancing dialogue and global cooperation on issues relating to pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, promoting the exchange of experiences and best practices, developing coordination arrangements between Finance and Health Ministries, promoting collective action, assessing and addressing health emergencies with cross-border impact and encouraging effective stewardship of resources.

G20 ministers said in a statement

Furthermore, the task force made a pledge to support “all collaborative efforts” in giving accessible and affordable vaccines that are effective, other therapeutics, analytical data, PPE; especially for lower and middle class families.

And in doing so, the task force plans to reach this 70% goal by ramping up vaccine and medical supply inputs from developing nations, while stripping away other constraints for financing and supplies. The task force did not specify these details, however.

But, the group did call for a boost in resilience of supply chains per makeshift technology transfer portals, such as new mRNA stations in Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa. However, for other nations to be albe to produce this mRNA tech requires the intellectual property rights paperwork to be voluntarily transferred to these nations, but are still being held up at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Reuters reports, ‘the previous goal had eyed vaccinating 70% of the world’s population by the autumn of 2022.’

‘Global Citizen, an international advocacy group, welcomed the earlier target date, but said the world needed “a battle plan” that mapped out how to get there, greater transparency how many doses were being produced where, when and for whom, and a clear understanding of where there were gaps,’ says the Reuters report.

Also at the G20 meeting at Rome, the ministers and other leaders will be discussing the steps to get the international economies running smoother than they are now, supply chain breakdowns, energy quagmires, and more.

The leaders are also expected to sign off on an agreed upon 15% global tax for big companies.

But another big topic that will be a prelude to the COP26 are the many climate emergency issues, and how to move forward in resolving these problems.

Leaders from China, Russia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico, canceled their plans to attend this meeting, but Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping plan to add to the discuss view video chat.

DW – a German outlet – reports that many protests have planned different rallies across Rome, some which began today. Between 5,000-6,000 police and 500 military troops have been called in to make sure the protests stay peaceful, and do not get out of hand.
