Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has readjusted their forecast for sales for their mRNA Covid-19 vaccines. The company is now estimating they will take in roughly $33.5 billion this year, up from previous estimates of 30%.
Due to fears of the Delta variant spreading, Pfizer states that booster shots will be needed to ensure greater protection.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States has yet to authorize a booster shot, but the company seeks to get regulatory approval for a third shot in August.
Additionally, trials are set to begin next month for Pfizer’s updated version of their vaccine that they say they have been testing against the Delta variant.
The WSJ explained last week reported that the U.S. is purchasing a shot at $24, up from the original price of $19.50 in earlier deals. In total, the U.S. purchased another 200 million doses. This brings the total of vaccines purchased from Pfizer to 1 billion.
Pfizer projects to make 3 billion doses this year, as it in talks with other nations about building contracts, increasing their sales.
In May, the Trends Journal reported that Pfizer expected to make $26 billion for 2021, but that has of course now changed.
But these estimates are conservative to some. Ronny Gal, a pharmaceutical analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, notes that the potential for Pfizer to earn $43.5 billion, conditioned upon landing more contracts. Pfizer’s grand revenue for 2020 was about $42 billion.
‘Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said in an interview that the potential need for annual booster shots could make the company’s vaccine sales durable, particularly with shots in demand as the virus evolves and herd immunity remains elusive,’ says the WSJ article.
We know this virus is very aggressive and is constantly creating new variants.

Thought the WSJ article poses the question that not everyone would need or even benefit from a booster, Bourla assures that the masses do. Bourla explained that after 6 months to a year from receiving the second dose, a third dose is necessary to ward off ‘waning effects.’
Bourla also explained that the company is currently testing another vaccine for a lesser reported variant, Beta. He said this vaccine is unlikely to be put into use, but plans to submit research for it.
Furthermore, the WSJ also notes, ‘Pfizer plans to expand its R&D of the mRNA technology used to develop the Covid-19 vaccine. On Wednesday, it said it planned to develop mRNA vaccines that could target oncology, rare diseases and immunology.’
The WinePress recently reported that studies from Israel document that the Pfizer vaccines are not as effective as first believed to be, and have already begun administering a third dose.
