AUTHOR’S NOTE: When doing research for my article, “A Restaurant In Singapore Will Be The First To Serve Lab-Grown Chicken,” I stumbled upon an article put out by PC Mag.com where KFC wanted to be the first restaurant to sell lab-grown chicken. They have lost that battle, but the way they want to do it sounds even crazier, and it may help them get the advantage in the war for lab-grown chicken dominance. This was posted in mid-July.
The fast-food giant has partnered with a Russian based company called 3D Bioprinting Solutions. They are eager to create the “meat of the future.”
According to a press release, them aim to craft something “as close as possible in both taste and appearance” to the restaurant’s original product, while remaining environmentally friendly.”
Our experiment in testing 3D bioprinting technology to create chicken products can also help address several looming global problems. We are glad to contribute to its development and are working to make it available to thousands of people in Russia and, if possible, around the world.
Raisa Polyakova. General Manager of KFC Russia.
If everything has gone according to plan, they should be in the testing phase currently. The Russian team is working to develop their 3D printed chicken nuggets that is an “additive bioprinting technology that uses chicken cells and plant material to reproduce the taste and texture of meat, “almost” without involving animals.”
3D bioprinting technologies, initially widely recognized in medicine, are nowadays gaining popularity in producing foods such as meat. In the future, the rapid development of such technologies will allow us to make 3D-printed meat products more accessible and we are hoping that the technology created as a result of our cooperation with KFC will help accelerate the launch of cell-based meat products on the market.
